T30 harddrive question...

#1 Post by mbh » Mon Jan 02, 2006 4:06 am

Hello all,

Actually, this isn't specifically a T30 question, but you'll hopefully be able to answer anyway...

I've heard a very brief (i.e., fraction of a second) scratching sound from the harddrive on two occasions now (at least I think it is the HD... from the left palm rest...). It is a fairly low sound, but kind of medium-high pitched at the same time, if that makes sense... I looked online, and found a .wav file of a scratching harddrive... mine isn't that bad, nor is it that long (the file sound was consistent for about 7 seconds). My laptop has not had any major problems (I noticed this the first time a couple of days ago)... should I be seriously alarmed?

Thanks!

You might want to download Hitatchi's Drive Fitness Test and give it a go.

If you have access to a CD burner but no floppy drive, there's a CD-based version of the same program here.

Click the link above and scroll down till you see "download now." (Note: I changed the above link on 1/13/05 as the old link required (free) registration to download, and the new link has a CD version as well as a floppy version.) There are 2 floppy diskette versions to choose from, one for Linux and one for Windows, plus there's a CD version for Windows.
Hitachi Global Storage Systems wrote:Download Drive Fitness Test

Note: This download creates a self-booting DOS diskette to run the DFT utility. You can create the diskette under Windows or under Linux, using the binary version, but you must start your system with the DOS bootable diskette to run DFT. DFT can only be used with x86 based processors.
If you have a floppy, you just run the downloaded file and it will create a disk for you. If you have a CD, you will have to burn the image onto CD.

If you have access to a CD burner you can download the CD version and burn it to CD.
