What's the proper shutdown method?

#1 Post by Cuda » Fri Jan 06, 2006 9:24 pm

I've noticed on my T23 that if I go through the "START" menu to shutdown it takes maybe 20-25 seconds to finish shutting down and go to a black screen, however if I just press the "POWER" button I quickly get a box that says it's shutting down and it goes to a black screen in maybe 5 seconds. Is one method better than the other or does it not matter?

It takes a longer time using the Start/Shutdown method because it is closing your files/apps that are running in the background. SHUTDOWN, halts all background apps where they are, and takes the big dirt nap right away ;)

I use Windows to shut down to make sure everything is saved propery. Windows recommends it. Can you notice a difference in starting up after shutting down one way vs. the other. I'm wondering if it might restart slower after shutting down with the power button, perhaps due to the prefetch stuff not being saved?

What's the proper shutdown method?

Many years ago when I bought my TP360 with W3.1, a friend of mine explain that by not using the shutdown procedure there were several files not erased from the hard drive. After a few times there would several MB of files that weren’t deleted residing on the hard drive. Windows operating system has become much more sophisticated where programs running on the computer have to be exited properly for files closure, memory releasing, and other items that need to be completed. This is why it takes some much time for the Windows to shutdown.
Sincerely,

OK, so I take it that it's best to do the Start/Shutdown method.

In Windows, through the "Advanced" tab in "Power Options", pressing the power button can be set to perform different actions. If the power button is set to "Shut down" there's no difference between using the start menu shut down or pressing the power button.

The only way I can get a T23 to go "...to a black screen in maybe 5 seconds" is by standing by. I'd check, and adjust if necessary, the button settings in power options.

Well mine definitely Shuts down quickly by pressing the Power button, it's not going into Stand By, thats why I was wondering if it was bad to do it that way.

Start/Shutdown is the best way. If you read on here there are tips to get your machine shutting down/booting up faster. It should not take 30 seconds for it to shutdown!

...Then do not walk or breathe nearby or Windows will start everything back up. :D
