Find this thinkpad for me

#1 Post by dalmanights » Tue Jan 17, 2006 6:58 am

I am going to buy a thinkpad. But the information the seller provides does not match with any thinkpad model.

Model - 2439
Serial no -BA38198
The screen is 10 inch , p3 mobile processor with 20 GB hdd usb, firewire wifi etc.

What could be this model?

I think I'm right in saying the only Pentium 3 Thinkpads with a 10" screen were the 240X and Transnote. Neither of which are model 2349. If I were you I'd ask the seller what model it is.

BTW 2439 is a Type. The model number is the 3 digits that follow the type, for example my T30 is a 2366-440. T30 is the family designation, 2366 is the type, and 440 is the model. You can go to IBM.com and enter your type and model into their search feature and come up with all kinds of info.

Thanks everybody. There is change in description from the seller.
Actually it is 2639-42J with a P3 mobile 600 Mhz processor according to the seller. I think it is sufficient to get the actual model and its comparison with other models as far as speed is concerned.
Can anybody tell me if this is good to work on in todays world. How does A P3-600 mhz mobile processor fairs with other plain p3 processors. Is more p3 faster that plain p3 processor?
thanks

I stand corrected - that's an S30 which does indeed have a 10.4" screen.

The chief advantage of mobile P3's vs. normal ones is lower power consumption - meaning longer battery life and less heat to get rid of. The 600MHz and faster ones have "speedstep," which allows the CPU speed to be varied dynamically according to load, further reducing overall power consumption.

Wow, lucky find depending on the price.

S30's didn't appear to be too common, at least not too easy to find at this point. There are several people in this forum that would love to get ahold of one, including myself.

As far as still being able to work on it in today's world....yes. There are many users here that are still using the original TP600 series, which are 233-400mhz.

about S30

#7 Post by dalmanights » Wed Jan 18, 2006 12:07 pm

Hi everybody, thanks a lot for your help.

Well the guess was right. It is indeed S30 and it is rare even in India. Its a brand new piece but with no warranty. It wll cost me about US $ 380 with carry case.
I still do not know its right price in the international market but I am going for it as I would not see it again if I miss it this time. Am I paying extra. ?

I am going to put one PCMCIA to USB 2 converter as I am still not sure it has USB 2.0 as claimed by the seller. IF he has more pieces I will let you know. Of course, shipping out of India is another hassle one may face. By the way you can always look into ebay.in for such rare things.
Thats it for the time being.

if you automatically detect the system using this link it should come up with model and system number information.

how to eflash s30 bios upgrade?

#11 Post by dalmanights » Thu Jan 26, 2006 8:40 am

The S30 I bought does not boot through anything but the HDD preloaded with WinXP Pro. I would like to know how to Eflash the BIOS that I downloaded with great search on the net. The Lenovo website is as dumb as it could be. Everything is in Japanese and nothing can be decifered for S30 as it is made for Japan.

The current bios is 1.79 of 2001 and the 2002 version is 1.82. I hope at least it can boot from other devices then.

Does everybody has the same problem? After booting through HDD ofcourse Win XP recognizes all ports and devices correctly.

I hope somebody will help me if not Lenovo.
