T30: CPU temperature question

#1 Post by galiyosha » Sat Jan 28, 2006 7:31 am

Hello,

I have a 2366-R7G T30 with 2,0 GHz Pentium 4 M and I'm not sure whether I don't have anoverheating problem.

When the machine is completely idle and I'm using an ondemand CPU frequency governor (i.e. the CPU is running at 1,2 GHz), the reporetd CPU temperature is around 45 - 50 °C. The fan practically never stops and is still running at a pretty high speed of ~ 4000 rpm or more.

If I put some heavy load on the machine on the load, after just a couple of minutes, the temperature of the CPU rises up to 88 °C! The fan is frantically running at 4700 rpm. I have the impression that at this point, CPU starts inserting some idle cycles itself as the machine becomes a lot less responsive (compared to the same load a minute or two earlier).

I'm not sure whether this is normal or not, but I don't like it all. My warranty will expire in a month or two, so, please, fellow T30 owners, is this normal?

Thanks a lot for advice.

Your idle temperatures are normal. Not so sure about your load temperatures. What tool are you using to monitor them? Perhaps I could try it on my Compaq laptop with a P4-M to see if I get similar numbers.

I have a T30 with a 2.2ghz Celeron and it idles at about 46degC. Heavy load temps also rise into the 80s.

I'm running mainly Linux, so the temperature readings are from the generic ACPI thermal module (/proc/acpi/thermal_zone/) and ibm-acpi module (/proc/acpi/ibm/thermal), but I'm pretty sure any temperature monitoring utility for any OS would give me the same results.

But thanks for your notes. I will probably contact the local service anyway as I really don't like this at all...

I wonder if your OS is causing elevated temps? Though I don't have temp monitoring available in DOS, I've noticed mine runs noticeably warmer when running DOS rather than XP.
