NEC DVDR/RW ND-6650 in my T22 => $30

#1 Post by t20user » Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:32 pm

I was looking for a DVD burner for the T22 and after reading about the NEC drive working on the T2x I nixed the idea of a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card with an external drive. Since I could not find the NEC drive at Newegg I figured I would get the $79 Aopen slim drive and try that. Then I checked pricewatch and came up with a place that had the ND-6650 for $29!..

http://www.unityelectronics.com/product-product_id/3208

It is a refurb, but I ordered it and I will try it out. I figure for $29 I will risk it. I am also not familar with Unity Electronics, but the feedback on Pricewatch was good. If you order, do so at your own risk...

I will post to this thread how it works out when I get it.

NEC Burner

Thanks for the tip! I ordered one and will give it a try in my T23 and my wife's A30 when it arrives.

Nice find! I'm sure there'll be plenty of folks upgrading their TPs with a DVD burner at that price. Heck, I'm considering buying one as a spare for my 6500a. BTW, the conversion is an easy mod that pretty much anyone should be able to handle.

After posting, I tried your link but only get a blank page. Searching pricewatch.com for nd-6650 and 6650 returned no results. Browsing the pages at unityelectronics I only found a nd-6500a refurbed for $29: http://www.unityelectronics.com/product-product_id/2636

Interesting... I have not received a confirmation email yet, and yes, the link is down. I originally found it at Pricewatch by clicking on Storage Devices/ DVD Drives and Burners and then clicking on SLIM. The 3rd one in the list is the ND6550 from Unity Electronics. The link from there is now down also. I wonder if they made an error.

Maybe they had mistakenly posted as 6550 instead of 6500, or maybe they sold all the 6550s.

Does anyone know the difference between the 6500 and 6550?

Edit: typo -- should've been 6650

That deal looks hot! I couldn't find any info on the ND6550A, so I'm assuming it's probably a little faster and maybe offer support for DVD-R DL, as the ND6500A only supports DVD+R DL. While checking out NEWEGG's site, I did find the ND6750A, which is the current model I believe and they have the lowest price I found as well at $84.99 plus shipping: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827152069

OK, they did send an email but yahoo flagged it as spam. I got the tracking # and the burner is on its way.

Keep us updated on how it works out, think my T23's CDR/DVD burner is toast. It keeps getting stuck at 6% burn completed and just hangs while the drive's LCD is flashing away... Thinking of ordering that refurb and taking a chance.

ND 6650

#12 Post by schen » Fri Feb 03, 2006 10:30 pm

Well, apparently they filled my order as well with the drive in the original ad which is the NEC ND6650. So I guess we'll see what happens when it shows up next week. I also found the other NEC drive when I went back to their site later, but not the ND6650. My best guess is that the thing price for that drive was so hot, they sold out almost immediately!

Well .. I can say that I have one in my T23 and one in an external slim case. Either works perfectly. Much better burner than UJ-8XX burner thats in my T42s.

Look forward to get my Dock II so I can use it as my primary hassle-free burner.

NEC 6650

#15 Post by schen » Thu Feb 09, 2006 2:50 am

I received my burner today from Unity, made the necessary mods and up it in my trusty T23. So far I've only run a DVD movie on it and looked to see if it was recognized correctly. That all looks good. I'll try to do some burns this weekend and see how that goes and report back. It looks like I lucked out and got one of the 6650s before they ran out!

Alright, I got the drive and installed it. I burned a DVD and had no problems. It was quicker than my desktop DVDR. I am VERY happy with the drive and the service from Unity. I was thinking of going back to get a 6500 for my other machine but it looks like they are out of those too. I should have bought the lot when I had the chance! O well, I hope some of you cashed in on the deal.

got mine too. One question, when I was removing the rails from my old DVD-ROM I stripped 2 of the little screws. Is it possible to order a new set of rails/screws from IBM/lenovo?

Yeah, you can probably order a set from IBM/Lenovo, but it will probably be cheaper on ebay. I got mine for about $10 including shipping. It was a pretty quick job even including cutting out the notch. It took more time to get the foam and residue out of the way.

Interesting Thread, checked prices locally here in UK and ND-6650 average about £60 inc shipping. If they are adaptable for T 2* series i wonder if anyone has tried one in a 600 series model? I in process of refurbing a number of 600's various specs and this would be a nice addition. :) Might try and obtain one for a T23 I have and then try on the 600's

I would initially say - Why not?

But there might be other differences - Have you tried searching for it

You may not be able to burn at the highest speed the drive supports due to the slower processor of the 600 series (pII right?).

Otherwise If it takes the same ultrabay2000 drives you should have no problem.

DVD Burner for 600

#23 Post by schen » Wed Feb 15, 2006 12:46 pm

Not to mention that you'd have to cut a notch in the faceplate for the T2* series that would leave a hole for the 600. I guess you could try it in the 600 first, then if you want to do the T23, make the modifications at that point.

By the way, I burned some disks over the weekend and it works great. Much faster than the Panasonic UJ Multi burner it replaced.

DVD burner in TP-600

#24 Post by MooZaic » Thu Feb 16, 2006 7:52 am

Strange how some companys can sell refurbished drives for $30 in US and I can only see £80 nd6650's on ebay UK (only warrantied for 30 days! ). I have just obtained a 1xspeed dvd burner original option for T2* series going to check out this 1st on a 600 ( change rails and interface at rear and see what the fit is like ). I wouldn't imagine an x8 burner would burn at x8 on a p2 300/400. Would maybe like to know so that when I refurbish a 600 I can say that it is capable of burning DVD's at x * speed using these drives. And if they don't do so well I could always use one for a T21/2/3 or a T30 or R31, R32, R40, media slice, etc , etc

I dont think this is common. They could have sold that drive to me for $50 or $60. I think it was a fluke. After I posted this here they were gone within 1-2 days and the 6500's were also. I wonder if they will get more soon.

That price was pretty hot (ND-6500A, hotter for those who got the ND-6550), glad I didn't wait and grabbed one (ND-6500A) for my T23. Hope they get some more in so I can pick one up for my sister's A20M. Burned some CDs, will try DVD SL & DL this weekend.

I got on for my T23 and it works great. It was easy to put in the notch. I just scored it with utility knife and then nibbled out the plastic parts with a set of wire cutters. Worked a lot better then trying to cut the whole piece out.

NEC Burner

#28 Post by schen » Sun Feb 19, 2006 11:12 am

I probably should have used a slower method like the utility knife and nibbler. I used a dremel type tool and it was almost too fast! I'm curious about what everyone did with the foam. I've kept most of it on as a dust seal, just removing the parts that obviously interfere.

I first tried putting the rails on without removing the foam. When I saw it wasn't ganna fly I picked it off with my fingers, screwed on the rails and cleaned up the residue with a razor blade.

I cut the notch with a dremel and it came out nice, nice straight edges. Then I cleaned up the burned plastic with a razor blade.

I know this is a somewhat old topic, but is it safe to say the say nec 6650 is best all around drive? I just picked up a 6100a for my T30 before reading and now kind of regret it.
