Battery conditioning

#1 Post by kengeo » Tue Feb 07, 2006 1:01 pm

Whats the difference between a full discharge & a deep discharge? IBM
recomends a full discharge & recharge for 3 cycles to recon' a Li-Ion
then says that a deep discharge should only be used on a Ni-Mh battery
as this will damage a Li-Ion one!! have I misunderstood the article? Also
is it possible to overcharge a battery if left on overnight?

Simple misnomer. Turn off the PM timers and let the battery run down until the system crashes. This will not fully discharge the battery, it's not a good idea to completely discharge any storage battery.

Let the battery recharge overnight, then deep cycle the battery two more times

just fyi, but I remember reading online that completely draining and recharging li-ion cells will reduce its life.

Per IBM's instructions:
Perform the following steps if your battery is Li-Ion:

a. Unplug the AC adapter and let the battery totally discharge. The computer automatically goes to standby mode when the battery is fully discharged.
Note :
Li-Ion batteries need to be charged to 100% at the start of the battery reconditioning process.

b. With the proper AC adapter, let charge the battery until Battery LED is solid green.
