I have discovered an "unknown device" listed in Device Manager on my T21 Thinkpad. Is there any way to discover what this "device" is so that I can install the proper driver or other required "fix" ???
On my Thinkpad Win98SE lists the following:
Standard Floppy Disk Controller
- System Board Extension for ACPI BIOS
- System CMOS/real time clock
- System Speaker
- System Timer
- "unknown device" [with a yellow exclaimation]
It appears that the BIOS determines this listing.
On my desktop Win98SE lists the following:
Standard Floppy Disk Controller
- Standard Floppy Disk Controller
All the "other items" CMOS, Speaker, Timer, etc.. are listed further down under.
System Devices
- System Speaker
- System Timer
- etc....
So I cannot figure out what that "unknown device" might be - any suggestions ???
Win98SE Device Manager lists "unknown device" ??

Thanks for response, I'm not even sure how to post a "link" to a screen shot. Wouldn't I have to get the screen shot into my browser first ??
From another Forum I got the following freeware link.

This is an excellent little program that somebody put a lot of effort into. It is worth running just to see it in action.
It came up with 81 "devices", Win98SE's Device Manager shows about half that number. The "volume" is overwhelming and one "blank" line caught my attention.
I "suspect" because the Thinkpad has a Device Bay [which can hold EITHER the DVD/CD drive OR the floppy drive] that the Device Manager is "detecting" the missing floppy drive. Because the freeware shows -
" blank "
Drive vendor IBM
pnpl D:
D: is the designation of the Device Bay. I don't plan on any further action.
Thanks, again.
