Need HELP on a T20 with D:\ is not accessible

Hi all.....newbie to this forum here. I inherited a T20 with Windows NT where the CD Rom drive will not play any audio or data discs.
The CD drive is recognized in My Computer as being the D drive. It also shows the CDRom and Atapi as being started in the device manager.
I have installed the latest Bios and would think that it's not a hardware issue as I have swapped a different CDRW/DVD drive into it which also gives me the same "The device is not ready" message. I also swapped a floppy drive into the Ultrabay which worked fine for me. I do not have the original software disc for the CD drives nor a recovery disc. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
