How to clone a hard disk?

#1 Post by RHM » Sat Mar 25, 2006 11:17 pm

I have a new 40 GB hard disk for my T30. (The old one is making noises, but still works.)

What is the easiest way to clone my old hard disk over to the new one?

Get a usb HD enclosure, place new drive in it, download Acronis TrueImage 9 and install on your pc, follow the instructions in the wizard. It is actually very simple, if you have the HPA it will clone that and it will be bootable.

Coincidentally, I just downloaded that backup program. The USB enclosure will accept the small laptop drive, I assume?

Where would I get this? A good computer parts store?

Yes, i found mine at a place called tigerdirect.com, be aware since you have a t30 you may need to get an additional or optional power supply with the drive to get enough power, I went through that so save yourself the trouble and get one with the enclosure or at radio shack.

USB Drive, etc.

I looked at Tiger Direct and they have many of these. The T30 has USB-1, so I am wondering if I should get an enclosure with USB and Firewire. I have a Firewire PCMIA adaptor that might work with and external Firewire drive.

Can you help me again by telling me the type of drive we have in the T30? That is, what kind of drive does the enclosure need to accept?

I will probably go to Fry's, a local electronics store that has lots of PC parts to get this.

Also, have you had any experience with buying aftermarket batteries for the Thinkpad? There are so many sources. I bought one for a Toshiba laptop I used to have that did not seem to hold a charge. So I am shopping more carefully now.

There is a post on this Thinkpad site about two sources for IBM batteries. The prices are around $80. But I suspect there are good generic batteries too.

I also have a question about XP setup, if you don' t mind another topic!

I was trying to share files across two of my PCs today and did
various things to try to turn on file sharing. Nothing worked, so I
gave up for now.

Anyway, after I stopped, I noticed that the log on and log off
windows or screens had changed. I now get a Win2000 looking shut
down box when I click the shut down button in XP. It has the pull
down menu with the options such as shut down, standby, etc. I
previously had an XP-looking window with large buttons for these
activities.

Likewise, when I start up now, there is a Win2000 type log on box
where I can write in a password. (I am not using passwords.) The
blue screen with the tropical fish or chess piece picture that I
click to start is gone.

Why did this change? How can I change it back to the WinXP appearance?

Thanks. This is a minor, but irritating thing.

To your first question, I too use the firewire pcmcia and it works great, just remeber the power issue, before I got the adapter for the enclosure there was nothing. As far as specs on the drive, not sure, from my experience I have several different drives, even a couple from old print systems in printers, and one I bought third party 7200 60G, all work fine.
Right now I have a HTS726060M9AT00.

Aftermarket batteries for me would be a no go, I am anal about certain things and that would be one, my next battery will be from ibm parts dept.

Did you change from a workgroup to a domain? Right click my computer >computer name, did you create a domain or are you still part of a workgroup?

Domain or workgroup

#7 Post by RHM » Sun Mar 26, 2006 12:09 pm

By the way, thanks for moderating this site!

Go to Properties > Computer Name, the window has the following:

Windows uses the following information to idenfity your computer on the network.

Computer descrition:

Full Computer name: RICHARDPC

Workgroup: MSHOME

To use the Network Identification Wizard to join a domain and create a local user account, click Network ID.

To rename this computer, click Change.

I seem to recall messing with some kind of network wizard when I tried to link my PCs together.

Hmmmm, well one thing you can do is a system restore to an earlier time, before this behaviour. Also if you go to desktop display properties, themes what is there? You can make a lot of changes to the appearance and functionality using the MMC snapins but it doesn't sound like you did that. I have never used the network setup wizard, prefer the "old fashioned way".

Oh yeah, thanks!

I am set to XP mode in the display settings.

I just did a system restore. The only date available recently was earlier yesterday. It is back to the XP appearance with the tropcial fish button!

Thanks!

Cloning Worked

#10 Post by RHM » Wed Mar 29, 2006 11:43 am

I bought a hard disk enclosure that included the software to do the clone and it seemed to work fine!

Thanks.

I also bought a PCMIA card that has USB 2.0 and Firewire which did not work.

Any idea why there are three entries in the System Device Manager for USB ports when this card is not installed?
