T20 Processor Upgrade....I did one, it's just not recognizin

#1 Post by BossTone74 » Thu Mar 30, 2006 4:31 pm

I moved from a 700 PIII to a 1000mhz PIII and it still says 700 in the hardware system properties... are there some dip switches that need to be changed?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Have you verified that the processor is compatible with the system bus (100MHZ) on the T20?

Interesting... now, when you say hardware system properties, you do mean R-click "my computer"--> properties page, right?

If so, then I would get a secon opinion on true clockspeed. Maybe something like sisoft sandra lite.

Beyond that, I'm afraid I'm not sure. Good luck!

What does your BIOS report? And while you are at it, check the BIOS version too and consider an update. A new Windows installation will not fix this.

IBM TP T41p (1.7G/1GB/100GB-7k100/DVD-CDRW/SXGA+/BT)
IBM TP T22 (900/512/40/DVD/CDRW/14")
IBM TP A31 (1.8GHz/512MB/40GB/DVD-CDRW/15" SXGA)

I check the bios and it is the latest verion. It was showing 1000mhz
so i started a windows update...and restart...and guess what...995mhz!

thats good enough for me!

Thank you for your support...
Very strange, I've done upgrades before, but that has never happened...
I even restarted like times five before, and nothing.

EDIT
IT WENT BACK!!! AAAHHHHH!!

One word for you my friend: Ubuntu :)

Seriously, this sounds like a windows flakiness, doesn't it? Nothing is changing hardware-wise when it changes processor speed? Unless...

In your BIOS, have you disabled speedstep, or otherwise told it to always go maximum performance?

I think that this is the result of Speed Step. See this thread on an A series laptop:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... t=700+1000

EDIT: Forgot to add that if you are running XP, install a program called MobileMeter to determine your speed. I think that you will get the full 1ghz when you are running software that requires the full usage of it, otherwise it will run at 700mhz.

I checked the Bios it is set for the max...Looked at the processor info and it said "intel speed stepping technology", So that means I shouldn't worry about it???

It just uses the processor at varible rates when it's running heavier apps?

yes no??

All this fuss for nutting?

I just went into the IBM power configuration program and noticed that their was a system performance scheme their. I changed it to MAX processor usage...I think it's all good...back up to 995mhz

No reason to set it to the max, just wastes battery power when idling or doing low power tasks. Use adaptive and then download and run Mobmeter to make sure it really is kicking up when required. BTW, I don't think Mobmeter installs anything to your system, so it's a pretty cost-free piece of software to install.

Yes, it is meant to kick into action when needed. AS Nolonemo pointed out, leaving the speed step technology there, it will allow your battery to last longer.

Consider it something like a hybrid car that uses both gas and electricity. It kind of slows down when you are stopped at a light and then kicks into action when you begin to accelerate. (hehe....this from a guy that just bought a Durango  )
