T21 fried?

#1 Post by Bgradid » Thu Apr 06, 2006 3:44 am

Ok, so I have (had I guess) a T21. It appears my 3rd party AC adapter fried though, and now I can't get any pulse from the laptop at all (the indicator that its even plugged in doesnt work). So I was going to replace the system board. I was wondering a few things though.

Mine is the model with the 1400x1050 screen
Does it matter what T21 system board I get to replace it? Are all T21 boards going to be compatible with this screen or am i going to have to hunt down this exact model?

Would it be possible to use this screen with a T23 chassis that was meant for a 1024x768 screen? It might be a worthwhile upgrade to get the extra 8mb of video ram (which would be crucial to me right now, 8mb isn't even for a 1400x1050 screen really, plus I could add more ram, faster processor, etc.)

Thank you very much.

I would check with the Hardware Maintenance Manualfor part numbers, because there are a few different system board for these systems.

As for using the LCD in a T23, it might be a gamble. I lucked into getting the 14.1" LCD from an i1400 to work in a T23, so it might work.

Ugh, I took a look into the hardware maintenance manual, different parts all around for the SXGA screen. I doubt I'm going to be able to find a system board on ebay.ca any time soon.

Ugh. I just got the thing a few weeks ago off of ebay, only to have a 3rd party AC adapter kill it

Oh well, time to start saving up for a thinkpad with some warranty on it maybe. I wish SXGA screens were more common, they're so pretty! :D

Unfortunatlly I know for sure a T20 motherboard will not work with a SXGA+ screen

Thanks for the heads up though

Ugh, Maybe I should think about moving up to a T41/42/43 if I can find one with a SXGA screen cheap enough on ebay

The T40 is pretty cheap right now.

Just remember, even dead, you can still sell your T21 here in the forum and make up a little of the difference.

Wow, that's pretty cool :D

Right now I'm looking at a replacement part though,
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 6867785553
That looks like it should be compatible, I'll just replace all the components with the ones I've got

what kind of condition is the screen in?

i would be interested in picking that up from you if the screen is in perfect condition... i hate the XGA screen in my T23.

Screen has no white marks, there are two marks that are slightly lighter that only show up under complete black though.
As for dead pixels, I can't remember making any out.. they're not as glaringly obvious on a SXGA scren because i'm sure some MUST be there.
Are you sure you can switch from an XGA to an SXGA on a T23 without replacing the system board?

Great. Got an ultrabay battery for it today, smoke appeared when I put it in my T21.

100% positive. all you need is the cable and LCD

LMK if you want to sell it... could use some pics of the blemishes :)

Hard to get pics of blemishes without a working laptop :(

I might sell it or I might try to get a replacement system board. If a T23 can take an SXGA screen despite its model originally having an XGA, I might try to get a lower half of one of those.

Tell me if you'd also want an extra battery holding 32000mAh, an ultrabay battery, ultrabay dvd, and an interanal wifi card with an antenna, haha

if you had a ubay dvd/cdrw id be all over it, but ive already got a dvdrom

I unfortunatly have no idea what the actual mAh rating on my ultrabay battery is, as i just got it today. I purchased it off of ebay a week ago, before my laptop had died.
Was reported to be in 'almost new' condition, though it does look like its been used by its external casing.

[censored] T21, why'd you have to die on me
