T30 shuts down after POST

#1 Post by Vitty » Wed Apr 19, 2006 2:01 pm

Hi Folks,

Got a bit of a head scratcher here....

I've just replaced a T30 ribbon cable (LCD was intermittant, stripey etc) but now it wont boot unless i use an external monitor.

As soon as i select the LCD (Fn+F7) it powers off.
Wont charge in this shutdown state, unless i disconnect battery and power supply. Then charges normally.
Otherwise its fine on the external screen.

Tried CMOS battery (removing it, and a new one)
Disconnected the inverter, and even the screen ribbon cable but still shuts down (instantly) when i select the LCD.
Tried booting with no battery, still shuts down and vice versa with battery and no PSU.

Disconnected everything i could and booted into bios on external monitor, but still shuts down on switching to LCD

Tried new memory etc, but as i said it boots fine on external, so a bit futile! Swapped ribbon cable back and checked connections to inverter. still same.
Can someone confirm that T30 will boot to LCD without screen connected (even though you cant see it!)

I've read somewhere about sticking 'suspend' switches ie. the one that is made when you close the lid, but ive checked this one (SW1) with a multimeter and its fine.
I have also read about a keyboard suspend switch that is activated when the keyboard is removed, but cant see one...is it just on the 700 series that this exists?

Please help, not many thinkpads beat me, but this one has (so far!)

Oh, and saying its the mainboard is not allowed!!

i guess the burning question NOW is was the ribbon cable the correct part number..?

also, why not put your location in the user info..? :)

The ribbon FRU was lifted directly off the ribbon cable, and as far as i can see there is only one for the T30.

Like a fool i added my location to my sig!

So....

The keyboard 'shutdown' switch...fact or fiction? If there is a keyboard microswitch on a T30, where the heck is it?

Otherwise, i'm stumped!

Only present on systems that had keyboards that "opened", e.g. 75X, 76X, etc.

Your problem sounds like a knackered MB, sorry I can't be more helpful.
