T23 to T30 convertion

#1 Post by radek » Fri Apr 28, 2006 6:51 pm

Hi !
Could anyone help me in this ?: I have just bought t23. It's great :-) . But it seems that SuperSavage doesn't support hardware OpenGL acceleration. Now I'm thinking about replaceing my t23 mainboard+cpu with the same set but from t30. Question: Is it possible to put t30 mainboard &cpu into t23 case ? Reading documentation wouldn't give me the sure answer. I'd rather know this from you guys, who have the experience with this stuff. Iknow also that there were no models made by IBM between t23 & t30. So it's promising. They probably kept the design of t23 case and relesed t30 using it. Am I right ?

P.S. Sorry for my English :-) . My nationality : Polish.

Welcome to the Forum!! :D :D

The layout of the board is completely different. For example the USB slots and power adapters are in different locations. See the pics below to demonstrate the differences.

Typically IBM keeps the same case within a series, ie T20-23 or T40-43. The T2x, T30, T4x and T60 have completly different chassises.

I've worked on the T20-23, and I don't even think a T23 board will fit in a T20-22 case.

Of course, I haven't actually tried this, so I could be wrong. (If I am, let me know!)

The T20, 21, and 22 stuff is interchangable, though. (Physically.)

Indeed there is an external difference between t23 and t30. (thank You for these pictures :) ) . Howewer, sockets are case's integral part and should be connected to the motherboard with some cabels, right ? So if I get myself longer cables, will I be able to connect the motherboard ->usb&DC IN, regardless the different layout of usb's and DC IN in t23 and t30 ? Is it the only difference ? Imean: is there enough space in t23 case to put t30 system in it ?

No, the board actually butts up against the back of the case. Those connections are part of the board.

In every T20-23 I've seen, the connections are on an IO card, that plugs into the bottom of the mobo, at the back end. You can remove the mobo, without removing the IO connections.

You're right, I was picturing the 600/600E boards in my head, which have the connectors attached to the systemboard.

Yes, but the I/O connectors are on specific places on the board and will not fit with a board from a different machine

Sorry for bumping this but I had a similar idea. Searching around on eBay, there are assembled bottom portions of T30's for sale. My T23 recently took a dive and won't power up anymore. Was thinking of putting in a T30 motherboard in the T23 enclosure but aparantly that won't work according to this thread. I was wondering if the T23 palm rest, keyboard and screen will fit on the T30's lower portion?

This is what I'm talking about
