T20 newbie questions...

#1 Post by Olwe » Sun Apr 30, 2006 11:50 am

I just wrangled meself a T20 on Ebay, so is there a site somewhere that has ALL the poop on the T20? I looked around didn't find anything specific. For example, what level of USB does it have, 1 or 2.0? Also, I'd like to know what's upgradable (besides mem, HD, CD) such as chip? video card? I'm also wanting to put a Linux on it, any tips, gotchas there?

Welcome to the Forum!! :D :D

THIS is the site with all the "poop" on the T20.

If you'd like to know how to replace the parts within your T20, then you can use the Hardware Maintenance Manualas an excellent guide.

If you'd like to know what your system came with originally, you can enter your system model and type number here.

As for the speed of your USB ports....1.1.

Most of this information, as well as upgrade information, can be found by using the "search" feature at the top of your screen.

EDIT: To save you a little work, as I am feeling charitable today:

1. The fastest processor is a 1.0GHz (search for specs and part number),
2. The Gpu cannot be upgraded.
3. Linux - we have a conference just for linux information...feel free to check it out from the main page.

Good to be here!

So if the USB is only 1.1, is there a good card that can bring it up to 2.0? I want to use an external hard drive, namely. On another laptop of mine with only 1.1 it was a nightmare. Each card I tried seemed to be terribly underpowered, literally, not able to handle real throughput beyond maybe a keyboard or mouse. One even had a separate power adapter, and it still couldn't handle my external drive. BTW, my ex-drive has its own power source, so all the card would have to do is handle the data stream.

I think you may be able to upgrade to a USB 2.0 via a pc card. Something like this might work http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDeta ... eID=k22350

As stated above, you are stuck with the current video card. While you might be able to try to upgrade it, that would require extensive work.

Thinkpad T-42P 2373 GUU-2.1 GHz; 2 GB RAM; Mini-dock

There are numerous 2.0 PCMCIA cards available on eBay and elsewhere. They aren't too expensive and are available with 2-6 ports.

I haven't used one, so I can't tell you which one to go with.

FWIW....I have used a generic 2 port USB cardbus PC Card on my laptop a couple of times with no issues at all. Cost was around 20-25.
IBM Lenovo 100s 14" / T61 14.1sxga / X200 tablet / Microsoft Surface Pro 2 256GB / T61 wide and 15.4" and an iPad Air 2 and Ipad Mini 2....

CPU Upgrade for T20?

#7 Post by Olwe » Sat May 06, 2006 4:41 pm

Just got the little beast and finally got Fedora 5 on it. (I'm not religious, but Linux doesn't have the spyware/virus probs). It was a struggle, as the CDs I burnt weren't being read by the old CDROM. But Linux allows install across the Internet and that went smoothly. So everything's good so far.

According to the people I bought it from my T20 cannot be upgraded from 700 Mhz to 1.0 Ghz, maybe a lesser speed, though. Any info on any possible upgrading? Again, the graphics card is not upgradable, right?

It depends on your luck. I upgraded my T20 to 1GHz and it worked with no problem at all. And I know at least 3 people who succeeded in this upgraded. However, there are also some people who couldn't make it work. So there may be some versions of systemboards, some of which can go to 1GHz and some not. I don't know what is the difference. If someone out there knows what makes such a difference, I'm really curious to know....
Remember that 1GHz CPU generates more heat so you will need to replace the heat sink assy to the T22's one together with the CPU.
Again, the graphics card is not upgradable, right?
Right, simply because there is no graphics card in T20.
The graphic chip is directly soldered on the systemboard and there is nothing you can do about it.
