CDRW Drive Stuck

#1 Post by Em1 » Fri May 05, 2006 11:22 pm

Today I went to take out the cdrw drive and put in the dvd drive but the tab wouldn't eject it. I push it to the end and nothing happened. I tried forcing it out a LITTLE bit but stopped short of doing anything stupid. I haven't done anything to it, this is out of the blue.

Any suggestions?

Can you open the drive? See if the inner drivebay frame is bent down, and holding it in. I had one like this, and I had to remove the keyboard bezel and gently bend it up. (It came that way, from an Ebay sale.) Works fine after I bent it back.

The other thing you might want to do, is pull the keyboard, and try to push it out from the inside.

I can open the drive.

Update: couldn't nudge or force it out. How would I remove the keyboard bezel?

Just a quick one; you did try inserting a paper clip into the little emergency eject hole next to the blue tab, right?

You shouldn't force the drive out.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I can't get it out. The tray will still open, using the blue tab and the little hole, but the whole drive won't come out the normal way.

Oooh, different problem. I now see what you mean by "tab."

In the extreme case, you would have to take off the keyboard and try to push it out from the inside as mentioned.

I don't think it is that bad, but I can't think of anything else right now that could help. If I think of anything else, I will edit/post back. :)

Good Luck :)

I had this happen several times with one specific DVD-ROM, and only in one T23.

Try pressing the drive inwards, up and towards the front of the machine, then slide the lever again.

I assume you have had it out at some point in the past? Its not still got the 'security' screw in it?

Otherwise, its probably the top label has lifted and is catching.
As said before, keyboard off (undo the screws on base labeled with => arrow), and it just lifts out .

Very good point. An often overlooked simple step of the process. I generally leave the screw out.

(sorta) stuck DVD drive in Ultrabay

#10 Post by rkawakami » Thu Jun 15, 2006 10:39 pm

Just received a used T21 (my first T series) and found that the drive eject for the DVD does not work properly. I pull back the tiny little latch near the back corner and the lever underneath the right side of the drive does not pop out. Yes, the screw is removed from the bottom of the case. No, nothing seems to be impeding the drive from sliding out the bay. I am familiar with the A31's way of removing the optical drive (move latch and out shoots a plastic tab which you tug on to remove the drive). From a look at the hardware manual for the T2x series the eject system looks similar to the A31 I use at work. None of that is happening with my T21. For now I can poke a straightened paper clip into the DVD's emergency release hole, grab the tray, and pull (not a good idea, I know) the drive out. I've tried gently, and a little bit more firmly, to coax the lever out by prying on it with a screwdriver but it's really stuck in there. I would like to eventually use a HDD adapter in the bay for backups but as it stands now, if I put it in, I won't have any way of grabbing onto it and pulling it out. At this point I guess I'm in for a partial teardown of the T21. Any advice, on the teardown or stuck lever, would be welcome. Thanks!

Found problem causing stuck Ultrabay 2000 device

#11 Post by rkawakami » Sat Jun 17, 2006 2:56 pm

Well, after using IBM's excellent hardware manual for the T2x series, I managed to remove (and re-install) everything I needed to get to the root of the problem. The eject lever for removing the drive from the Ultrabay was stuck because the threaded insert for the security screw was loose. It fell out after I removed the Ultrabay 2000 slot. When I first looked at the bottom of the case and saw that the security screw was already missing I did not notice anything wrong with the threaded insert. It looked like it was still in the proper position to allow inserting the screw. My guess is that the insert slipped down into the hole so that half of it was still in the arm of the lever and the other half in the hole of the laptop case. There was nothing wrong with the spring wire, the lever or the guides in the bottom of the case.

Needless to say, I did not try to put the threaded insert back into the lever. I don't want this to happen again :) . I can live without the security screw.

I had the same problem with dvdrom on my t30.
In slides out a little bit, and then stucks.

After looking closer I saw a small hole on metallic bottom case of dvdrom.
I insert a screwdriver in it and forcefully pulled drive out.;)
