I've bought alot of computers from Ebay including a t23. THis time I got hosed. I got a t30 that was supposedly perfect 2ghz, 1gb ram.
I received it and it wouldn't turn on and only showed 512m ram.
I put a folded up piece of paper over the front ram module and put the cover on now that works. I'm working on IBM to cover that as the laptop is only two weeks out of warranty.
The power switch requires that you tap on the entire assemby (The switch and the led lens to it's left) at the same time as you depress the button to turn it on. (yes it took alot to figure that out.)
Then it's fine. I have a couple questions:
1. What is that assembly called? Is there a blow up diagram available anywhere?
2. Does it just pop off like a screen bezel or is there more to it?
3. Anyone have any suggestions how to fix it?
Thanks.

I would recommend that you try to read through the Hardware Maintenance Manual. There are exploded views of the parts, as well as instructions on how to remove and replace almost every single component of your T30.
Not sure how exactly to fix your problem, other than to tell you to check for loose connections.

sounds like hte keyboard might be loose, on my T23 and T40 the power button is located on the keyboard.
