T22 eBay scam??

#1 Post by amgc36 » Sun May 21, 2006 2:14 am

To those who have upgraded their CPUs:

When you go into BIOS, does it say your new CPU speed or the old one?

The reason I am asking is because I believe I got scammed by a seller on eBay. As posted in my previous thread, I bought a T22 900MHz on eBay, but I tested it and everything suggested that it's a 700MHz CPU instead of a 900MHz. Speedstep is off and I have run the Intel utility to confirm it is 700MHz.

The BIOS says it's 900Mhz, but I thought it might be hard-coded. I could open up the case to physically examine the CPU but since I broke the case of the T20 I had before when I tried to open it, it would be my last resort to do so.

Please help, thank you!

Try updating your BIOS or tweaking with the speed settings in the BIOS. If that doesn't work, then I'd say you have the wrong CPU.

Interesting, a CPU swap perhaps? As the only speeds that the CPUs in the original T22s came in were 800MHz, 900MHz, or 1.0GHz and not 700Mhz.

The speed is not hard coded in BIOS. I gues you are using WinXP. There is a thread in this T2x conference, where someone was able to fix this issue with a new OS installation.

I searched the IBM website but couldn't locate a BIOS update. Could you point me to the right place? Thanks!

Edit: NVM, found it...

Well I have installed Windows XP on the system at least 5 times with two different hard drives. And I got the same result.

Well I have been running my T22 with AC power all the time. So I guess it's not that problem.

what is the actual sspec on the CPU? easy way to tell if you have been scammed or if the chip isnt working right with the system.

Update:

I tried running Ubuntu and CPU info says that it's running at 896.169 MHz.

Now does that mean XP is misreporting the CPU speed? If so, how can I fix that? I searched the forum and found nothing relevant. Thanks!

QFT.

I've never gotten a correct speed, unless there was a decent battery in any of my T2* stuff.

My T21 800 runs at 666 only on AC power.

My T21 1000 runs at 700 only on AC power.

My T23 1.2 runs at 1.2 only on AC power.

They ALL run at rated speed, when a battery is installed, on AC power.

Nope. Speedstep is off and I have tried all power schemes. Still 700MHz (695Mhz to be exact) in XP.

XP underreported my T22 900MHZ CPU speed. As to fixing it, who cares? I find that Mobilemeter (CPU speed and temp applet gives correct CPU speeds). You can download it from link here:

Mobilemeter will also show whether the CPU is stepping properly or not.

I bought a "T23" on ebay last year and it turned out it was actually a T22 with a T23 nameplate. When I checked the 'detect my system' on IBMs website it said it was a T22. The seller shipped a T23 and let me keep the T22 (lucky me).

Im not 100% sure Intel will not lie to you, but I actually trust them more than the sellers on ebay!

t20user, thanks for that Intel link, I just downloaded the CPU Utility and ran it and am happy to report that my T22's advertised 900Mhz CPU is actually running at 900Mhz. That utility downloaded and installed in less than 2 minutes. Very handy.

Ya, he was an IT guy at a school or something. I didn't want to curse him out before I knew for sure the 1st laptop he shipped me was really a T22.

Its amazing how much some people on ebay value thier feedback. They will do silly things just to keep that 100% number.
