T21 TV output (PICS ADDED)

#1 Post by iann070 » Sun May 21, 2006 9:28 pm

I've been trying to get my T21 to work on my TV and have installed the S3 Video drivers and booted up with an S-Video cable connected.
I've managed to get a picture up on the TV but the desktop is too big to fit on the TV and I have to pan across the screen with the mouse.
I've played around with the S3DuoVUe settings and have set it to PAL (for Australia) and also played with the Horizontal and Vertical size settings, but all that does is makes the picture on the TV smaller without reducing the size of the desktop, so I still have to pan across the desktop.
Am I missing a setting somewhere?
Do I need to reduce the resolution down from 1024x768 to 800x600?
If I do then that will also reduce the resolution on the T21's LCD (which I really don't want).
I don't think there is a way to set independant resolutions for the LCD and TV as the TV output is just a mirror image of the LCD, isn't it?
Any suggestions?

MODERATOR EDIT: I edited the title to include a pic warning, for the pic that was added further down. -tff

T21 Owners, I just decided to try to use the s-video output.

I cannot get an image to appear on the TV. I purchased a cable from SVideo.com, they tell me to select the "TV"

Quick Summary under XP: In order to be able to see the movie playing on your TV you have to select the TV in the "Device settings". The movie will not play on both the laptop's screen and the TV under dual or clone view. Here's what you have to do under Win XP: Go to Start; Control Panel; Appearance and Themes; Display; Settings; Advanced; select the "tab" for your Graphics card; select "Device Settings"; select TV.

Since I have the original driver from Microsoft, I checked to find out if I can get an updated driver. Now I find out Lenovo doesn't provide the older drivers.

Anyone know where I can get any updated drivers or the "Presentation Manager" that has been discussed in some of these posts?

Thanks.

No S3 Display Tab

#3 Post by racerz » Mon Apr 14, 2008 7:18 pm

I downloaded the latest S3 driver for my T21.

According to the "How to enable TV-Out" instructions, there is suppose to be a tab S3Display, where I can select the display device.

For some reason, I do not have this option.

Any suggestions please? I also have the cable connected from the computer to the tv prior to booting the machine.

First see if you can do this:
Image
This will allow you to change the resolution of your S-Video out if it is already set up.

If it is not there, or not working. you need to click this button to get to the S3 menu.

at the s3 menu, click on the display tab.

If your s-video cable is plugged in, and your T.V. is set to that imput, there won't be a big x through the T.V. screen.

I hope this helps!

Andersonjoe711, thanks for your post.

I can select select Monitor #2, but my menu does not have the "S3 Display" tab that allows me to choose a TV. (I noticed you have a T23, however it appears the driver should be the same for the T21, T22 & T23)

I'm guessing that the driver I have does not have this menu (however I did download the latest version that was on Lenovo's website). The S-Video cable is plugged in prior to turning the computer on and connected to the television, but I truly don't think the computer would be add this display tab solely based on if a connection was present or not, or would it?

One other item of note is that I'm using a S-Video cable that has four pins, yet my plug output is 7 pins. I read that the 4 pin cable should work as well.

As it's been about 2 years since I installed the video drivers, I'm not exactly sure what files I downloaded from the Lenovo website, but here are some screenshots which may help you.

After downloading and installing the video drivers I guess the first thing to do is to go into "Device Manager" and check under "Monitors" and make sure there is an entry for "Generic Television"

Next, go to "Display Properties" and set the resolution to 800x600 and the color quality to 16 bit, then click the "Advanced" button.

Click on the "S3DuoVue" tab and make sure that "TV" is checked and the "TV Type" is set correctly.
As you know, you have to boot the Thinkpad with the S-Video cable connected from the Thinkpad to the TV, if the TV wasn't detected on bootup, then the TV section will be greyed out.

The S-Video cable I use is just a cheap 4 pin cable I bought from a two dollar shop, nothing special.

If you still can't get the TV Out to work then I can't really think of anything else.
Maybe the Thinkpad isn't detecting the TV when it boots up, so maybe try a different S-Video cable.

My T21 Has An S-video Output?!? Who Knew!!

#7 Post by nikki605 » Wed Apr 16, 2008 8:45 am

Well, I'll be  I forgot my T21 has an S-video output jack.

racerz - exactly which cable did you buy from svideo.com? I may try that! Is it a common enough cable that I should be able to find it at a local store like BestBuy or Radio Shack?

I purchased the following cable, because it included both the video and audio cables.

You could probably use a regular S-Video cable and just connect the video only. And yes, you could probably pick it up from Radio Shack or any other electronics store.
