Thinking of upgrading from T22
Looking for some advice. I have been using a T22 for at least 3 years, it runs flawlessly. No real reason to upgrade other than perhaps a few features.
My current T22 is 900mhz with a 20 gig hard drive which is less than half full. I run Windows 2000 and it's very stable. Don't see what the benefits of WinXP would be except it runs slower.
So why upgrade?
I'd love to get USB 2.0 so I can use a USB hard drive for backup
Also, it's easier to configure a new laptop while my old one still works. It can make the transition smoother.
I'll probably buy on eBay.
Any recommendations? T30, T23?

Neither of those choices will give you built-in USB2.0.paulmlemay wrote:Any recommendations? T30, T23?
Get a T40.

You can search for other posts on this one, but T40's are obtainable in the $500 range and I also recommend R51's - although they run about the same. R40's are a little less and also have USB 2.0, long battery life (8-cell) and WiFi antenna's built in.
T22's are very nice machines, you can still get about $250 for it anyway.

A few years ago I had a 700 MHz PIII 512M T20 Win2k for business & they upgraded it to a 1.6 GHz T30 Pentium M running XP with 1 G of memory. I ended up being a little disappointed - there just wasn't as much of a speed improvement as I expected and it didn't feel like it was worth the effort to transfer all my data/reinstall all the applications & basically lose a couple days of work.
With the same screen resolution, no USB2.0, the T30 just isn't a big enough jump for me over a T22 (especially if I'm using my own money).

T40 or R51 1.5GHz Pentium M for $500 minus sale of T22 for $250 equals really nice upgrade for $250, preferrably with warranty remaining. The difference will be noticeable.
Seems worthwhile to me.

Don't understand the question.rattlehead wrote:What exactly is the issue here? Why would it be any different from the T22?
First "T" series machine with a USB2.0 port was the T40.
T23 is a PIII-M. Max RAM 1GB.
T30 is a P4-M. Max RAM 2GB.

Not if you want native, i.e. onboard, support.rattlehead wrote:Ah, I think I get it. So, if you want to be able to use 2.0 USB devices, the T23/T30 is not the way to go.
But USB2.0 can be easily implemented with a $10 PC card.

So, given what James just said, and your stated reasons for upgrading, you might be better off just getting a $10 USB 2.0 PC Card and connecting the USB hard drive to your existing T22, and then use the rest of money for something else.
PS I've been very actively checking ebay the past few days, and I think that the ebay closing prices are up at the moment due to Fathers' Day and Graduation. My guess is that in 2-3 weeks, you will see far less buyers, and then you will also see laptops that are being sold "because I was just given a new one". So, the prices will be lower then (in theory).

I have upgraded just like people are discussing in this thread. I went from a T23 to a T40 and could not be happier. I got 600 for my T23 (it was pretty loaded with extra battery, ultrabay battery, dock, etc.) and got my T40 for 560 shipped, so basically a no brainer.
I upgraded originally for the following reasons:
1)No built in wireless
2) No USB 2.0
I really am happy with the T40 for all those reasons, but others as well like:
1) T40 doesn't even get warm. I love being able to have it on my lap for hours in front of the TV.
2) Much quicker (the FSB and much higher cache helps a ton)
3)Nicer screen (brighter)
4)Can open the laptop with one hand instead of two with the new latch setup and it latches more securely.
5)Much better battery life
Overall I would tell everyone that is thinking about this upgrade to do it! You will not be disappointed.
