T23 WiFi mini PCI shared?

#1 Post by Jon A » Tue May 30, 2006 8:55 am

Looking to buy a T23 and saw a few with 802.11b on an MPCI card. On the specs for these machines the modem was also found on an MPCI. Forgive my ignorance, but does this mean that the the modem and 802.11b are shared on one card? And if this is the case and I'm thinking correct, wouldn't you lose the modem when you upgrade the wireless? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

that is correct. note that it is an 11 mbit "b" type card, therefore sloooow. there is no 54mpbs "a/g" type card with a modem onboard that i am aware of.

but honestly: who needs a modem nowadays?

rarely need a modem these days, it's true, but for that rare occasion I suppose one keep that old card around in the bag with a little screwdriver.

Thats what I do, haha. The IBM card has less range than a generic Intel 2915ABG card does, and it only supports 802.11b. Just get a 2200BG or 2915ABG.

thanks for the tip. And not a bad price right now @ under $25, the 2915ABG.

Well, since I just installed the 2200, I found my old modem PCMCIA card, that has a pop-out phone connector, and put it in the PC card slot.

-G rocks!

T23 wireless tutorial?

#8 Post by kid_entropy » Tue Jun 06, 2006 10:42 pm

Hi I am new here.

I recntly bought a T23 off ebay, love it so far but not a huge fan of the PC card sticking out the side. I've been reading these posts and it seems like its possible to put an internal wireless card. Are there any tutorials on-line for this?

Thanks a lot

I just did this with my newly ressurected T23, was pretty easy. The biggest problem is if your LCD doesn't have a built in antenna system (like mine). However, I was able to get the whole thing working with a $10 ebay antenna (reception isn't that great, but, I rarely use it more than a room or two away from the wifi station anyway), and only needing to take off the keyboard and mini pci panel. I'll post picture on the weekend if there's a need for it / I get a chance.
