T30 Security Chip Problem

#1 Post by ihurrell » Wed Jun 07, 2006 4:49 pm

I have a T30 2366 with a security chip. I have used the laptop for about a year without enabling the chip in the BIOS

A week ago I enabled the chip in the BIOS and rebooted. Before the OS loaded I decided I didn't want it on so disabled it and then rebooted again.

After Windows started, the laptop worked ok for about an hour and then froze, never to start again.

Has anyone had problems like this?

Done all that - including the beating :(

All that happens is the lights come on like it going to start then nothing happens, no beeps, no screen, the CPU gets warm, the drive spins up.

In other circumstances I would say its the mainboard that has died, but it seems such a coincidence that after changing the sec chip settings in the BIOS everything stops.

I opened up the machine and found that the sec chip was not fully seated.

In the IBM Hardware Maint manual it say that if the chip is removed for any reason, it must be re-inserted immediately. Does anyone know what happens if the chip is removed for any length of time?

The only thing I have read of is that it prevents the system from booting properly if it is removed. I have also heard that it ends up with having to get a new main board as well. Good luck with the SecChip re-install though. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
