I am having problems with a CD/DVD Rom on a T23. It has been working fine until recently. I was wanting to upgrade from Win2K to XP so I uninstalled all of my software and used Config Safe to restore system back to original condition. When I did this I lost my CD Drive (HL-DT DVD Rom GDR8081N). I used Config Safe to restore back to a snapshot I had recently taken and still no CD Drive. The Unplug/Eject Hardware shows the device but in device manager I get the (!) and error message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I went to IBMs website to try and update the driver. The only thing available was a DVD firmware upgrade and the Thinkpad Software Installer. I have tried both of these and windows still does not recognize the DVD Drive. I also tried a friends Ultrabay CDRW-DVD Rom and get the same thing. My Ultrabay Floppy drive still works fine, and my Ultrabay DVD drive works fine in my friends thinkpad. I tried to copy his drivers, but it still does not work. Can anyone tell me how to get this Ultrabay DVD drive working again?

ThinkPad T23 2648-EU2 PIII-M 1.13GHz (512KB), 256MB RAM, 30.0GB HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 8X-3.3X DVD-ROM (GDR-8081N), Modem(MPCI), Ethernet, TV out, Li-Ion battery, Win2000.
Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Just to limit things down and make sure its not the thinkpads hardware that could be at fault, try booting off of a CD real quick. If it can do that, its a windows setting somewhere

Yes, I can boot from a CD. I went through the TP Config Util, on Bay Devices I only have the general tab (Second IDE devices Enabled) and Allocated Resources Tab. Should the CD/DVD show up here? I also went to device mgr and uninstalled my CD/DVD drive and everything under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, then rebooted. It found my Prim and Sec IDE Controllers, found CD/DVD, but in device manager I still get the same "missing or corrupt driver" message under DVD/CD-ROM Drives. I ran PC Doctor and tested the CD Drive. PC Doctor sees the CD/DVD and all tests pass. I am inclined to think this is strictly a Windows issue. I went ahead and upgraded to WinXP (network install) and have the same results.

Hey guys, I found a fix on Microsoft Knowledge base that got my drive working. I am posting the instructions in case anyone is interested. Thanks for your help.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
4. On the File menu, click Export.
5. In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
6. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Note If this data type is missing, go to Method 2.
7. Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
