T23 or T30???

#1 Post by hjxcpa » Fri Jun 23, 2006 2:10 pm

Hello, everyone

I have used Thinkpad 600X for several years, however, it runs too slow for the 192M memory and 6G hard disk, I want to buy a second hand IBM Thinkpad notebook, the question is whether I should selecet T23 or T30.

As far as I know, T30 is better than T23 in the following areas:

1. It has a faster CPU and hard disk.
2. As it has 16M ATI display card, the display performance is better

However, T30 also has problem areas as follows:

1. The memory slot problem, it seems it is on the mother board, which may be solved by using only one slot.
2. The CPU is P4M, which is hot while T30 runs, especially in summer.

My question is :

If I replace the original 256M memory with one 512M memory card and replace the original 40G hard disk with 80G hard disk, is it a right choice for me?

Thanks in advance and I hope you could give me your advice.

Is it possible to consider a T40?

T23 14" SXGA+/1ghz/512/40gB

There is a recent discussion with exactly the same topic: T-23 vs. T-30 : pros and cons ?

IBM TP T41p (1.7G/1GB/100GB-7k100/DVD-CDRW/SXGA+/BT)
IBM TP T22 (900/512/40/DVD/CDRW/14")
IBM TP A31 (1.8GHz/512MB/40GB/DVD-CDRW/15" SXGA)
For sale: n/a
WTB: n/a

Thanks for your advice.

I know T40 is better than T30 and T23, but it also has its own problem, I visited many BBS for the second hand IBM Thinkpad transaction and found that there is always problem on T40's display card, some DIYer could fix it by themself, but most of other user has no choice but to return it to IBM after sale service, it is always expensive.

T40/T41 has different structure CPU (PM) compared with T30 (P4M), but in my opinion, there maybe minor difference in the overall performance between T30 (upgraded to 512M memory and 80G hard disk) and T40/T41, but T30 is much cheaper.

See this thread for a long discussion on the differences between the various models:

Thanks everyone, I have already bought T30 the day before yesterday, I upgraded the RAM from 256M to 512M and upgraded the hard disk from 40G to 80G (5400RPM).

Until now, it runs well, thanks again.
