If anyone is interested....Vista

#1 Post by BillD » Tue Jun 27, 2006 1:59 pm

First I am a MS hater from day one..So this is NOT a pro MS post by any means..But It's been raining here in the NE forever and I was bored so I downloaded MS Vista Beta and loaded it on my T23...

If anyone is interested it was a plesant surprise.. It loaded fine, saw my video and sounds cards..Saw the wireless card..It's nice and stable so far..

It's BIG,d/l is 3.2g,once loaded about 8gig...My T23 passes all the minimum req. except the video card(recommend 32mb card). But except for the fact that it lags alittle when looking around the desktop it's been OK...

Surfing the net,for some reason, seems much faster then XP or Xandros...The pages load faster,snappier..

I'm going to use it regularly for a couple of weeks to see if it stays 'stable'..:)

I'm far from an expert, but I try to answer any questions...
1 T23 1.13 Mhz.SXGA+..512 RAM..Built in Wireless
1 T23 1.13 Mhz..256 RAM...
1 600e that now a 600x(500Mhz) with 256 RAM
1 600x(500 Mhz) with 327 Ram
1 600x upgraded to 600Mhz with 256 RAM

By all means keep updating on your experience. I doubt I'm going to be updating my T23 any time soon and am definitely interested in how Vista runs. :D

Based on the Vista related threads already posted (primarily in the Windows OS section) one of the main things people will be interested in is Aero Glass. That is, whether it runs and if so how well.

Thanks for being the guinea pig.

As for Aero glass I'm not being a guinea pig...With only 16mb video card I'm not even going to get the chance...

The rest so far has been good...Day 2 and Vista is still stable.. I've loaded Firefox,Cacheman and Winzip all with no problems... I tried to load AVG antivirus,a window came up highly recommending I don't do that..:)...I read Avast works with Vista,I'll try that..

I wish I could install Beta 2, I installed 5342 on my laptop 5219 was more stable than that pre 2 beta. Im hoping that hey would drop down the minimum requirements again.

One of the nice things avail thru Vista and Media Center is the sidebar, but if you dont want to spend part of your adult life downloading Vista to get that, Desktop Sidebar,

http://www.desktopsidebar.com/ is the ticket..

I run it on my desktops and TP's which have XP Home. The website has all the skins and themes MS has, and some they dont. Stable, pretty easy to configure and the price is right!

It's been about 2 weeks now and Vista is still running stable.. From what I been reading and seeing with my eyes Vista is NOT ready for prime time yet.. There's still drivers missing, coming out of standby isn't always smooth and there's a few other minor problems, but nothing major,SO FAR..

I can't see MS releasing this in Jan.2007,but since it's MS I wouldn't put it pass them to release Vista with a bunch of bugs..

My personal view of Vista is that, without Aero,it's a lot like XP but with better security. Since this T23 obviously won't do Aero I don't see any reason to run out and buy Vista when it's released. If I had a super duper machine that would do Aero maybe I'd be interested in buying Vista, but to go out and spend mucho $'s to see eye candy,I don't think Vista is worth it...

With sidebar and Aero aside, are there any significant new features that would make the average consumer really want to upgrade? I'm wondering if this is really a significant upgrade (like going from 98 to XP) or if it's more of a smoke and mirrors kind of deal like we had with going from Windows 98 to ME.
ThinkPad T60: 2GHZ CD T2500, 3gb RAM, 14.1" XGA, 60gb 7k100, Win 7 Ult
Latitude E7250: i5 5300U 2.3ghz, 12gb RAM, 12" 1080p touch, 256gb SSD, Win 10

Exactly my take also...The average person may not be willing to spend hundreds upgrading their video card and RAM just for the eye candy..And the power user may not either,we already have XP's security holes plugged. So Vista's 'retail' sales may be slow at first..The big market for Vista at first will be new computers..

I see very little difference beteen BASIC Vista and XP..I have it on my desktop also, which I built less then a year ago..Aero won't run because my video card, which is a decent card, won't do Directx 9.0.. So will I pay 100+ for a new card? Plus the cost of Vista to upgrade from XP.. I doubt it...

But I'm sure there will be a media blitz by MS and the computer makers pushing new computers that will handle all of Vista's eye candy. So between that and MS dropping support for Win2k,Win 98 and XP SP1 eventually Vista will be the only way to go...

I ordered and received the Vista Ultimate Beta 2 DVD and installed it. My T41 does not support Aero, so NIX to that for the time being. I have not yet installed any IBM drivers, so video is the pits (standard VGA driver) and slow.

I then went Classic (like I run XP) and it looks and feels like XP (which in the long run, Clear Type aside) looks and feels like Windows 2000, which I happen to like.

Benefits for me? I don't see any yet. That doesn't mean I won't do it, but my initial strategy still seems correct - Wait until my Laptop and Desktop need replacing (mid to late 2007) and purchase new computers with Vista pre-installed. Aero will be working on said machines and I can determine then whether I want it.

My Vista experience is going downhill.

1. I put a Vista hard drive in my ultabay and tried to boot it. Vista broke. When I put it back in drive C, it said the hardware had changed so I had to rebuild the startup process from the DVD. That negated all my changes and settings to that point. Vista has become anal about hardware.

2. I tried some of the most recent T41 drivers (ATI Display, Intel Ethernet, UltraNav, and a couple of others). They all failed, even in compatibility mode. That means video is dog-slow and both the real mouse (track point) and the track pad are active at the same time. The combination is unuseable.

3. The built-in power manager says my battery is dead even though fully charged and plugged in.

4. The system try icon decrying that no AV has been installed stays glaring red in the system tray even though I unchecked the settings to warn me. Unchecking the setting only prevents the information ballon from popping up; it doesn't get rid of the icon.

5. In my opinion, Microsoft has ruthlessly and grotesquely butchered Windows Explorer. It opens in a bunch of document folders I don't use, but won't open in the C Drive folder view (like explorer.scf will). The little Plus signs beside folders in XP, 2000 (and earlier operating systems) to open a folder have turned into teeny weeny triangles that are difficult to pick right on. The result is that clicking on a folder may or may not open it. If it doesn't open, it hangs for a while. It has a Favourites section in the Folder view on the left side that I cannot get rid of. I did try classic settings, but in general, Windows Explorer has been dumbed down to the point where it is pretty much useless.

I understand that Vista is beta, and I understand that it will need more modern hardware. That should solve the display and the mouse issues, but the other issues belong to Vista and what I see so far says it will be less friendly than XP or 2000 for the things I do.

Early days yet (beta and all) so I'll see what happens in the first production version on a certified laptop.

1- All MS OS's are anal about hardware...

2- I agree 100%...Driver support for Vista is very lacking right now..Maybe because it's a Beta,maybe MS don't give a $hit about older hardware. We'll see..

3- Thats surprising..My power manager works well on this T23 under Vista.

4-Yep.I installed an AV(AVAST) but I still get the warning because 'my computer is at risk because I changed the security settings'..Useless!!

5- Honestly I haven't paid that much attention to Explorer...I've mostly been playing around in the classic view control panel, which seems pretty much the same to me.... Next time I'm using Vista I am going to look around more..Thx

i think S3 3D card is the worst thing in t23
but it is it is necessary to upgrade your ram and hdd if you want to run vista smoothly

More RAM is always good..When I first installed Vista on my T23 I had 512mb in it..It ran alright, since then I added another 128mb..I haven't noticed much difference. From what I read though if you have Aero working MS recommends 1gig of RAM..But Aero won't ever run on a T23 so I would think 512 would be plenty of RAM..

HDD? Do you mean upgrade the HDD RPM or Gigs? MS recommends 20gb free for Vista.. I partitioned 15gb of my 40gb HDD for Vista.. Beta 2 used about 8gb for the install..

mmm, i mean total performance, but also need to consider the thermal value, 5400RPM is the best for T23
the newest 5400RPM hdd,i think it is the Seagate 5400.3
enough Gigs are good
but don't forget upgrade your bios before upgrade your hdd

you can go to see the evaluating, such as follow
