a couple of questions

1) if I don't put the hd back in, is the system
supposed to boot to bios?

I hate to keep putting the hd back in again
and again for fear that it could damage it.
(it says something about that in the manual)

I'll try the CMOS watch battery idea.

2) forgive if this is a dumb question but do I need to renew the thermal paste(it's supposed to have paste right?) if
I try to open the laptop up and re-seat the
CPU?

thanks in advance for all you guys' help!

Yes, provided there's at least one stick of RAM installed.

There are no dumb questions and YES, renew the thermal paste whenever the opportunity arises.

thanks, I'm going to go to Radio Shack and get the
paste.

1) Just to clarify, whey you guys say RAM you mean DIMM
right? (same thing?)

2) Also when you say "one stick" that means the little DIMM
card under the metal removeable flap right? (there is only
one little DIMM board that I pulled out)

3) I was going to pull out the CMOS and take it with me
(just on the off chance Radio Shack may sell them) but when
I try to pull the little white plug from the system board it's stuck.
I don't want to damage anything by pulling on the wires since
I can't get on it even with needle nose pliers. Do I have to
remove the laptop casing to get to this or should I go ahead and
pull the wires?

again , thanks to you guys in advance... you are lifesavers!

Yes. Well, to be technical... it's SODIMM (Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module).

Correct. There are slots for two SODIMMs.

Doubtful that your local Radio Shack has a battery with the correct connector for the T2x. The battery (and holder) should come out with a little tug once you clear the battery from it's depression in the laptop case (remove holding screw, pry/lift battery up a 1/4 inch, pull out toward side of the laptop). Others here have had success removing the tabs/wires from the original battery and taping them to a standard CR2032 battery. Personally, I would get a new battery from eBay that already has the connector.

(edit: I'm assuming we are talking about a T2x system here. If not, then battery removal may be different. Sorry for the confusion.)

yes, it's a T23.
and sorry, I just noticed that I accidentally
replied on this post when I thought I was
replying on a post I had already opened.
I had this window open at the same time
since it looked like it could be the same
problem as mine.

I think I'm lucky that I did because you've given
me some extra very good information. Thank you
guys and I'll be doing everything that you advised.

CMOS didn't work. I bought one and blackTaped it.

The only thing that I haven't done yet is re-seat the CPU.
I've got the keyboard out and everything else... but couldn't
find thermal paste to buy since most stores are closed on Sunday.

I've also pressed the power button about 100 times trying to
undo a possibly overcharged capacitor. I also held it for long periods of time and still no go.

before my post gets too old and nobody looks at it anymore,(in case
the CPU re-seat doesn't work)

what do you guys suggest to do next?

Buy smaller parts and try them one at a time?

Which parts?

Buy a motherboard on ebay?

Give up and buy a new computer?

(this one has only been used about 6 months although it says it
was made a few years ago)
I love the computer, it's perfect for taking to school.

I split this off from the BSOD thread, to avoid confusion with the OPs problem.

the original problem is
that my T23 powers on
only to the power led light
and a running fan... nothing
else.

It happened when the battery
was low and I turned it off. A bit
later I turned it on again only
to find nothing was working.
