Upgrade from T22 - what path?
I've had my T22 since Christmas (thought I bought a T23 but in a bad ebay deal...) anyway, I've maxed the memory, upped the HD to 60gig 7200... but I still find that I don't see the performance I'd like to have.
I'm an incremental upgrader on a budget. Which Thinkpad and configuration should I look at as a possbile move up a ways upstream? If I was to commit $500 +- to the task?

There isn't a single correct answer to questions like this.
You say you "... don't see the performance [you would] like to have". How is the performance deficient? What are you using the machine for? What do you want to use it for? How long do you want it to last?
And the only component you can use in a new machine is the hard drive. (And whatever you've got for the Ultrabay if the new machine uses Ultrabay 2000)
A T23 will improve performance (faster processor, faster drive access, faster/more memory) but whether it will provide the performance you would like is questionable. And it uses PC 133 ram so you can't use the memory from the T22.
Quoting myself once again:

If you can provide information along the lines of the above we may be able to give a better answer

T30's aren't all that much faster than T23's and have their own problems. T4X's will be faster but more expensive. See this link for a quick comparison of the various T models:I've got XP Pro on a T21 with an 800 MHz processor and 384 MB Ram. The machine is not "bogged down". It runs marginally faster than the same machine when it was loaded with W2K.
------------
My T21 is significantly slower than my T23's to boot, hibernate and complete other tasks which are hard drive intensive.
Once the OS is loaded, the T21 is slower than the T23's but, for normal office applications, the speed difference is negligible. The T21 takes perhaps an additional 1/2 second to load Word Perfect, for example. Not something to be concerned about.

I use the laptop for everything- word processing, spreadsheets, email, research online, updating our church website, blogging, listening to tunes, watching DVDs - everything.
When I'm working on a Word document, with Firefox open and three or four tabs up, with my email being checked in the background it gets slower, and I don't dare run I-Tunes and import a CD or it will sputter. I've dialed the XP graphics way back.
I'd like a bigger screen, USB 2.0, built-in wireless, a lot more ram 1 gig minimum (as I think that's most of my issues). I generally look to upgrade every two years, and after Toschiba and Dell, am totally sold on the rugged TP.
You guys are right, there's no one right answer, but your experience and insight makes sifting through much easier.

Given what's in the last post, you might not be satisfied with a T23 or T30. That puts you to a T40 or T41, which might be more than you want to spend.
A new Z from Lenovo isn't much more than a used T41 might cost. Which makes buying an "expensive" used machine a tougher decision.
Sorry, no answer, just more to consider.
