Advice on replacing hard disk

#1 Post by hbrednek » Tue Jul 11, 2006 11:09 am

Looks like I need to replace the hard disk on my T23. I'm looking for advice as to where to start. I turned it over and opened the two inspection covers, noting that no disk was visible through either one. There must be a disk in there somewhere, though!

I had to do a presentation last night which I had prepared on my T23. Unfortunately, the hard disk failed and I had to scramble about for an alternative. I had a Knoppix CD which I used to successfully boot and run the machine and get a network connection, which I could then use to access some web pages which contained relevant content. So I was still able to use the T23 -- just not the material I had prepared. Sigh. But it strongly supports the idea that the only thing wrong with the machine is a failed disk.

If I remember my T23, the hard disk is on the side and the cover also encloses the sound jacks. ... JD Hurst

Aha! That makes sense -- sort of. I noticed a very curious screw holding the sound jacks in place. One that looked as if it was designed to be manipulaed using a coin instead of a normal screwdriver. Thanks for the tip.

Here's a link to the HMM: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4UYM3F

It has complete instructions.

jdhurst is correct on location. Turn the machine upside down and remove the screw located in the corner below where the "intel inside" stickers would be. To remove the drive, open the lid to about a 45 degree angle, put it on it's side and pull the drive up.

Well, it's not obvious what that screw does. Removing it doesn't immediately allow removal of the sound jack (plus IR) cover. I can pry around with a screwdriver but nothing seems ready to give up easily. I can pry harder but don't really dare to as I know if this comes down to a struggle as to which of us is the stronger, I will win over that little piece of plastic. Probably to our mutual disappointment.

Thanks for the tip and the link to the hardware manual. With your collective help I was able to remove the hard drive without destroying the rest of the computer in the process. Now on to phase two -- replacing the drive with a working one.

Thanks again!

Please take care. You can easily break that piece of plastic (although it can be replaced also). What it is, is a complex little piece with plastic encasing metal. The metal has ears that clip over the screws in the drive carrier (which is in turn screwed to the drive).

So remove the screw (which only prevents the drive from coming out on its own). Then, gently with your fingers try to pull the plastic straight up (assuming the laptop is on its side and open). By the way, the laptop screen must be open - it, too, secures the drive.

So having mushed that explanation, let me try again.

Remove the screw.
Open the laptop.
Stand it on it side with the drive pointing up.
Gently pull up the plastic drive cap straight up. Wiggle it a bit if necessary while pulling up. Wiggle it just a tad, not much.

Good luck, ... JD Hurst

Re buying a drive: You should also check what brent pressley may have available in the marketplace here.

Or Zip Zoom http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductLi ... ode=011006

Or Newegg http://www.newegg.com/

Anyway, it is located behind the headphone, speaker, and microphone jacks on the side of the machine. Looks fairly involved. Click on HD Removal and Install Link at bottom of this list...

I decided to pass on purchasing a USB 2.5" HD enclosure. I purchased a pair of these from Montana 4 Me and Techsmartz, instead.

It appears that USB 2.5" HD enclosure(s) require 5V AC Adapter to work properly. It appears that it is possible that USB 2.5" HD enclosure(s) can damage HD when it is without sufficient power or when unplugged before the laptop is shutdown properly.
