White dots on screen, like dead pixels but different T30

#1 Post by xbytes » Wed Jul 12, 2006 2:20 pm

occasionally a pixel on screen turns white, at first I thought it was a dead pixel but it turns black sometimes and goes away, also putting the mouse over it seems to make it dissappear when it is black, but it comes back when you move the mouse away, any ideas?

Has anybody else experienced this fault?

Your post's topic says "dots", as in more than one? Are they always in the same place on the screen? Or do they appear randomly around the screen? I'm assuming when you say that you move your mouse (pointer) over the pixel that it changes to the normal color. If you are using the standard Windows pointer (a white arrow) then it should be turning white.

If the bad pixel(s) always appears at the same spot(s) on the display then my first guess would be that your video memory is the problem. You can download PC Doctor for the T30 here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54659
(total of about 4MB download)

You will need to have a floppy drive and three diskettes. Download the three files and execute each one. They will then ask for a blank floppy and will write a portion of the diagnostic on each. When you have all three disks, re-boot the T30 with disk #1 in the drive, press F12 to select the boot drive and then specify the floppy drive. Continue loading the other two disks when prompted.

If you don't have a floppy drive, and do have ISO-enabled CD burning software and a CD writer, then try this link:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-56222
(total of about 54MB download)

Burn the CD image, and re-boot. Again, hit the F12 key to select which drive you boot from.

After PC Doctor has completed loading, you can use the arrow keys or the Trackpoint to select different diagnostics. Run the Video Adapter test and see if that reports any errors.

Upon further investigation (just received a T23 with two blinking pixels!), if the video memory test checks out okay, then your LCD panel is the next suspect. Since the only way to repair these pixels is to replace the entire panel, you may want to live with them for a little while.
