Help please!

#1 Post by UA123 » Mon Jul 31, 2006 11:39 am

Hello all my name is Euan I'm from Scotland and I have a T23 (actually 2 T23s) but 1 seems to be unable to boot up.

I had switched it off last night but when I switched it back on i got a Beep then 3 Beeps then 3 Beeps then one Beep and the screen stayed black. I've been all over the net looking for a fix andkept reading that it was probably the memory so that has been changed but it hasn't made any difference. Is there any reset switch - i backed up last night luckily but don't know what else to do

many thanks, Euan.

ok, start off with removing ALL the extras, remove the battery, HD, CDROM/DVD, modem, network card. You didnt mention how much RAM you have, if you have two sticks, remove one stick and try to reboot. If it does not, swap memory sticks and retry. If it boots, begin by adding one piece of hardware and reboot each time looking for a bad piece.. I would say your modem or network card is the most suspect as those fail the most often.

If the board still beeps with just one memory stick, then the motherboard has prob gone. You are -really- lucky you just did a backup!

Good luck,

TJ

The beep code of 1-3-3-1 generally points to memory. Try alternating or reseating the memory.

many thanks for your help however reseating the memory doesn't work - i have even tried swapping memory with my other T23 and that doesn't work. I think its got to be the memory board, i have been told that its probably not worth fixing (if its the board)

thanks, Euan.

Memory board? Did you mean motherboard? Did you try taking everything out and rebooting?

If you think it's the motherboard, have you done a search on eBay for a replacment? Average costs are abt $130 USD.

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dl ... otherboard

There are a couple 1.2GHz boards listed, and they are easy to swap out.

Yeah, if reseating/changing the memory didn't work, then chances are it is a systemboard problem, according to the Hardware Maintenance Manual.
