T23 and builtin Wifi?

#1 Post by BigWarpGuy » Fri Aug 11, 2006 2:47 pm

Does the T23 have a built in wifi? There is a compartment in the back of the T23 but the card is difficult to read since the 'cable' goes across the front of it. If it does, what kind would it be?

Yes, certain models did come from the factory with built-in wireless cards. Download the tawbook.pdf from here:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... awbook.pdf

This will list general information about the T23 series (as well as other discontinued systems). You can also download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T2x systems at:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4UYM3F

And finally, most of the information about the internal wireless support can be found using the "Search" link at the top of the page. Enter:

internal wireless t23

in the search box, click the "search for all terms" option and then limit the search to the T2x/T3X conference.

Wonder would it be possible to install the 802.11g chip instead of the "b"?

Yes, it is possible. It is a Mini-PCI card and they are widely available on eBay, and elsewhere. The T23s that came with wireless came with 802.11b/modem card, but you can certainly add a G, but you will lose the modem capabilities.

Here is the information from the card on the bottom of the Thinkpad.
How does one determine the chipset on the card? :?:

T23 Wifi

#7 Post by schen » Thu Aug 24, 2006 12:08 am

It's easier just to look at the card and see if it has 2 antenna leads connected to it. If not, it probably is one that doesn't have it. You can double check by looking at the LCD cover, if it is one that came with the antennas it should have two, 1 inch (or so) areas along the top of both side that have a kind of translucent plastic molded with ridges on it.

If you do have the built in antenna, the world is you oyster! The originally came with the IBM "High-Rate" 802.11b WiFi card, but you can put an updated MPCI card in there. I use an Atheros chipped card that not only is A/B/G, but also does the 108Mps Super G. Since it was not written into the bios for my T23 though, I had to use a hack to get rid of the POST error that says I have too many ethernet controllers. But that's pretty simple to do as well.

y cable?

#8 Post by BigWarpGuy » Thu Aug 24, 2006 7:56 pm

On my T23, there is one cable to the card and one cable to another card that is screwed into next to it. :?:

On my A22m, there is one cable that splits into two port connectors on the card. :?:

I did not notice any 'antenna' in the lcd cover. I will look again.

Antenna

#9 Post by schen » Sat Aug 26, 2006 1:49 pm

Based on your description, it sound's like those cables are simply the ethernet and/or modem cables that they all have (they are flat). Antenna leads are simply a round wire with a gold colored end shaped into a small round fitting. If that's not present; in all probability you don't have a model with the built in antennas.

There are a couple of ways to install antennas to use an internal WiFi card, you'd have to put it either under the KB or find some way to thread it up through the lid of the case. The models that have the built-in antennas have a completely different lids that have provisions to hold it in place. The secondary card that you describe is very probably a daughter card that some models have the provision to take. These are for modems and bluetooth. If you look around on ebay for WiFi cards/antennas on ebay, you'll come across some sellers that have outstanding sites that even have diagrams to install antennas on models that didn't come wiht them. One of the best is some sort of British seller that ships out of Hong Kong.

Will the Ethernet Daughter Card work with any new MPCI card? My WiFi card died and now the connection is dying also so I would like a modern WiFi 802.1g and still use the wired ethernet.

Requirement is drivers for EcomStation 1.2

Are you saying that some T23s with factory built in wireless DID NOT come with external antennas on the lcd cover ?

thanks
