What is this

I have a T23 and on the top of the lcd there is a rectangle rubber cap that covers a hole that has a number of brass contacts what is this?

It's called the "ultraport." Essentially it's a USB port but it uses a connector proprietary to IBM. There were a couple of accessories including a webcam and a microphone designed to fit on the port. If I'm not mistaken, only the T2x, X2x and A2xP models featured this.

that was the first thing i noticed on my recently acquired t23. its quite an eye sore. i suppose taking it off would make it look worse.

Funny... I'd actually like to find one of the webcams for my T20, but they don't show up very often on eBay and, when they do, they seem to go for a lot more than a VGA-resolution USB camera should be worth.

Anybody got one cheap? :)

i was on ebay yesterday and most of the items were definitely overpriced. i suppose some sellers get more satisfaction out of keeping a dusty item on the shelf rather than let it go for a reasonable sum.

It personally doesn't bother me :D
However, if it does bother you, don't take the plastic cover off at any rate. Then it will look ugly.
