15V 3.3A non-Thinkpad AC adapter for T21 (16V 3.36A)?

#1 Post by pianowizard » Wed Aug 23, 2006 12:23 pm

I just received a reasonably priced ($160 shipped) T21. It came with a non-Thinkpad AC adapter (Frontpath model F1700A) whose DC output is rated as "15V max 3.3A". But the label on the bottom of the T21 says "16V 3.36A". I have been using this laptop with this adapter for several hours and I haven't notice any problems. Would it be safe to use it in the long run?

Safe? From a hardware point of view... probably. Being 1v lower than "normal" and having very slightly less current capacity most likely it will not damage your laptop. The supply may run hotter than normal and in an extreme case can burn out and/or catch fire. But the same chance exists with any power supply.

Safe, from an operating point of view? No. You stand a chance that the lower voltage will cause instability problems with the laptop and could cause system crashes, with loss of data a possibility.

My advice would be to get a proper IBM 72 watt supply (16v 4.5A) even though the laptop is rated for 54 watts. This means that the supply has a higher capacity and will have to work less to provide power.
