T30 Fan Error

#1 Post by harsh72 » Wed Aug 30, 2006 6:11 pm

I am getting a fan error on my T30 - sometimes it boots without any problem. Sometimes the fan makes a more noise than usual. Do I have to replace the fan? I have cleaned the entire assembly (without taking it out, from top only after removing the cover) and the air vents, still the problem persists.

Should I get one of the refurbished fans off ebay?

Kindly advise.

Thanks

Same thing JUST happened to me. Your fan is most likely dieng I suppose theres a possibility it's not dead. Mine died, I bought a (listed as new but probably refurbished) FAN2 fan from e-bay since I figured while I was in there I'd swap out my 1.8 P4m for a 2.6 P4m and its been working great. The only problem I had was when I first installed it there was a slight vibration rattle that I couldnt quite figure out at first, it turned out to be the little tabs that hold the thin aluminum cover to the thick aluminum part of the assembly were loose, I tightened them up and its been quiet ever since.
Hope this helps,
-Kurt

Thanks Bob: Could you kindly also let me know from whom and for how much you bought the fan and the cpu?

Also, can we upgrade to a core duo?

Many thanks for your help

Just search on ebay for one of the two T30 fan part numbers.
46L4753 for Fan 1, or 46P3132 for Fan 2 (for 2.0ghz+).

Thanks for the prompt reply Kurt - was asking for the seller/price only because there are so many of them, and all are refurbished. Since you got a good one, the probability of getting another good fan from there increases

Thanks!

Many Thanks Bob: The store has only the 2.0 GHZ fan version - will that work for my 1.4 gig P4?

Either will work, I'd assume using a FAN2 with your 1.4ghz cpu would result in less noise since it could cool the chip with less effort. Both fan assemblies are the same size/shape physically the 2.0+ fan is just more powerful. This has the added benifit of if you ever get a new processor you wont have to get a new fan again.

While you're in there I reccomend using some good thermal compound like Arctic Silver 5. I also "purified" the surface of my processor and heatsink with the 2 part ArctiClean deal. Also when you apply the thermal paste use a razor blade to flatten it out as thin as you can.
