IBM Thinkpad T22 802.11b/g card

#1 Post by Trechi » Thu Aug 31, 2006 8:23 am

I've been looking for a WiFi card for my laptop for a while but can't seem to find a good one. What's a good one that doesn't put a hole in my wallet?

Generally speaking, most name-brand 802.11a/b/g PCMCIA cards will work well in the average home/office setting. It's only when you start getting to the outer limits of the operating range when you'll see problems. Probably your best bet is to search CNET.com or PCMag.com and look for their reviews on such equipment. "Name-brands" include (but is not limited to), Netgear, D-Link, Linksys, Hawking, Belkin, Buffalo.

Personally I am using D-Link DWL-650 (802.11b) cards and generic MiniPCI Broadcom-based chipset wireless cards in my 600X and T23s. My home's access point is a Netgear ME102. If you have or go with 802.11b/g equipment, make sure any cordless phones you have or are planning to buy are NOT using the same frequency (2.4Ghz) band. Same for 802.11a (5Ghz) gear; try to keep conflicting electronics away from your wireless network.

try to get a card with a super G chipset from atheros (gigabyte, netgear and many other use it on there cards), it can speed up to 108M/bit (if the router supports it) and the range is higher.

I've decided between two wireless cards.

Well, the cheaper one (Netgear) is probably the best choice. There is a possible problem with the second (Atheros) option. That particular WiFi card is designed to go into the Mini PCI socket located behind a panel on the bottom side of the T22 laptop (as opposed to the Netgear which simply plugs into the PCMCIA card slot on the left side). If you are comfortable with ripping the laptop apart to also install an antenna for the Atheros card then by all means go for it.

I'd stick with any PCMCIA (i.e. PC Card) solution as it is the easiest. Here's a link to the Netgear site which describes the card:

okay i think pcmcia is the better solution in your case(there are atheros-chips in pcmcia cards too[netgear wg511t for example]),

get at least a 54M/bit card if u want to share data in your home network or when u have a internet connection which is higher than 3-4 M/bit.

Cheap SuperG card

If you want an Atheros chipped card that's capable of SuperG, Airlink101 is a CHEAP alternative. Around here, Fry's has them on their weekly special on a regular basis.
