I think the best are the ones with internal wi-fi, SXGA LCD and 1.2Ghz Pentium III-M cpu. Look for them at pianowizard posted link.

True, but T23's with internal wifi and SXGA LCD's are rare indeed.

I may have a lead on a 2647-9LU T23 SXGA+ 48GB Internal wireless but I think 1.13GHZ only for about $200. Does that sound decent? Also do all internal wireless t23s come with external antennas on the lid?

thanks

thanks it has the embedded security chip too. I wish it was the 1.2ghz version but can't be choosy. I might be able to get it for even less than $200, I am told.....

might be fun to play with at that price, I guess.....

I bet many people would be willing to pay $450 for it! I envy you! Well, I am doing not too bad either, because someone just sent me a TP600E for free! Not sure if it's in working order though. I will find out tomorrow.

BTW, I doubt very much that there would be a huge difference in performance between 1.2 and 1.13 GHz.

yes pianowizard...He just told me he might be willing to go a bit lower....

I was hoping to go with a T40 or T41 to use in the field but this is a pretty darn good price for a T23 even if it is only 1.12 ghz!

It definitely needs more memory for my purposes...Only has 128mb and the original 48gb drive is probably bad, so he will throw in a 30gb (all he has right now), but I can upgrade that I guess...

Why is this guy willing to sell it for so ridiculously cheap? Is the laptop in not-so-good condition? Or is he not familiar with the prices of used Thinkpads? Or perhaps he stole it!

Actually it is part of a lot of a few old ibm notebooks and some associated parts he is trying to sell. I asked if I could just buy the notebook and he said yes....

He sent me a few pix, looks pretty good from them..He was selling in as is condition because the drive was probably bad but he said he has a spare 30gb that he will throw in it and test to make sure everything works okay if I am seriously interested...

TPadguy, I think I found the ad that includes the T23 you're considering buying. It's unbelievable! Three Thinkpads (which are "not in working condition", though you seem to be saying that the T23 works fine if he replaces the HDD), six memory sticks, three HDDs, and a bunch of accessories for only $200 total! One of the memory sticks is 128MB PC133, which can be used to increase the T23's RAM to 256MB. You should grab all these ASAP!

This T23 has 1.2GHz PIII, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, DVD combo drive and built-in wireless, and was sold for $645 shipped on eBay four days ago to a buyer with 811 positive feedbacks:

A T23 with such a configuration has got to be one of the best Thinkpads ever made! If it had wireless g and USB2, I might actually prefer it to my T43! (I don't mind the T43's always-on fan, but don't like its flimsy build.)

I always dream of that as well.....don't mind the 16MB graphic engine. The PIII is more than enough for me........maybe Lenovo or IBM should come out with their annivesary or whatever limited edition Thinkpad T23 with USB 2.0 and wireless G.

I'm currently using a T23 spec (see sig) like you guys have been talking about and it is absolutely awesome! :D ....and yes, the performance difference on the T4x is noticeable, but I'll have to say that with to RAM maxed out to 1Gb and a upgraded 5400rpm drive (courtesy of Brent Presley), it is pretty compareable on day to day tasks.

I shoot a lot of digital pics with an 8Mp Nikon and it even handles those files on Adobe Photoshop Elements pretty well.

I will have to say though; I really wish it has USB 2.0!

Have you considered upgrading to 7200rpm? That should further reduce the performance gap between your T23 and the T4x.

HDDs

#22 Post by schen » Wed Sep 20, 2006 1:47 pm

I ran it through my head at the time, but from what I saw with other machines, the differential between 5400/7200 and 4200/5400 and how it effected performance, just didn't warrant the added costs. At the time, I was also hoping to save enough money to bump my RAM from 512 to 1Gb which I felt would make a substantial difference. As it turned out, I got the upgrade for free!

All in all though, I'll have to say, that I'm extremely satisfied with my T23 in it's current spec. It is absolutely the best (and most useable) notebook I've ever owned personally. :D To me, the most useful features have been the SXGA panel and the SuperG built-in wireless!

I can't believe somebody is selling a T23 spec with wireless and 1.13 for less than $200. That's a GREAT deal. I might have a couple of 512mb SO-DIMMs for sale if I upgrade to a T40.

I just purchased a 2647-NU0 T23 on eBay with Buy-It-Now that has the following specs:

PIII-M 1.2GHz (512KB), 256MB RAM, 48.0GB HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 8x4x24x CD-RW, 802.11b wireless(MPCI), Modem(MPCI), Ethernet(CDC), IBM Secure Chip, TV out, Li-Ion battery, Win 2000

With shipping the total was $335, which is a fairly good though not great price. I like the T20 I currently use at work, but the XGA resolution and the lack of built-in ethernet and wireless are somewhat crippling. So I think this upgrade is worth it.

I own a T23 1.2G, it is very fast indeed. One disadvantage is the USB port is still 1.1 while the newer model has USB 2.0.

I just received my $335 T23 (it's my second T23 but the first one to have an SXGA+ display) and wow, isn't it impressive! It only has 256MB RAM but feels much faster than my Dell OptiPlex GX110 desktop which has 1GHz P3, 512MB RAM and a 7200rpm HDD. If I increase the RAM and get a 7200rpm HDD, it will be even faster! After owning this and the T43, I will never be able to tolerate 14-inch (and bigger) screens that only have XGA resolution.

UPDATE: I just won a 512MB stick for this T23 on eBay for $47 shipped!

I recently bought an IOGear GPU202 cardbus (PCMCIA) to usb 2.0 for my T23. Motivation: Canon 6MP with 2GB card and it shoots video clips. Downloading the card takes about 45minutes on USB 1.1 port but only a few minutes with the adaptor.
