How hard to replace T23 keyboard and where to get one?

#1 Post by silo » Sun Sep 17, 2006 12:14 am

I bought a T23 off eBay and it seems in fair shape save for the keyboard which has several nicked keycaps (letters worn/scratched off) and a space bar that doesn't seem to work on the far right side.

I was wondering how hard it is to repace the keyboard. Also, do I just buy one on eBay or here or is it better to buy from IBM/Lenovo (or is that even possible)?

Thanks,

Silo

Replacing the keyboard in the T23 is easy. Just follow the instructions to replace it in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T23 (do a search for this at IBM's website). Also there might be some movie in that website as well, but I don't remember if they have a specific movie for the keyboard.

As for where to buy the keyboard, I would just go with whichever is cheapest, as long as it is guaranteed not to be DOA. If you want to check prices from IBM go to their website and do a search for parts. You will probably need the appropriate FRU. You can get this from the HMM as well, or directly take it from the keyboard you are replacing.

Take care.

If it helps, here is the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Replacing the keyboard is almost as easy as replacing the ram.

I just did this exact thing, bought one off ebay and found I wanted a new Keyboard. It's very easy to replace. Look for the video on the IBM site, it's perfect and so easy.

I bought my brand new Keyboard off ebay for about $29 including shipping. I forget the seller, however.

I got one on ebay, but I am a little dissapointed in its condition. i would make sure the it does not have any shiney keys. That is a tell tale sign of lots of use.

Instead of using his eBay auction, he is offering them here in the forum for only $12 shipped, which is cheaper than his auction.

See here.

You can buy a new one from IBM-Lenovo but they are much more expensive than used and IBM- charges steep for S/H

Replacement Process? I have failing eyesight (need lots of good lighting) The IBM instructions are not crystal clear (especially the directions about screw to loosen and remove & they do not warn you the external piece on the hard drive comes off the drive easily, etc
Typical stuff for good technical instructions. Be sure to watch the video instructions a few times. It moves along briskly.

Despite all this, I did it for the first time in 25 minutes. I could do it now in five. Just take your time, make sure you do not lose screws, pay attention to how you withdraw parts and do not force anything

In the process, you will see how easy it is to replace the hdd, optical drive, & backup battery (yellow).

I bought my T-23 two months ago to replace my "old" 570e... my keyboard is in very good shape, but something upsets me: the keyboard flexs a bit around the upper and left side (q, w and a letters).

This happens to you guys?

Also, you do not have to get a keyboard that is labeled T23... a keyboard from a T20 through T22 will also fit, it will just not say T23.
