T30 11bg Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter

#1 Post by anneortim » Sun Sep 17, 2006 9:06 pm

The newest BIOS update (2.10) for the T30 has an update to "Support IBM 11bg Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter" according to Lenovo Support. So does that mean I can now pop in an IBM 11bg Mini PCI and it will work? Which one? What part number? Also wondering if this means I can use any non IBM cards and they will work? I've read about the no-1802 fix and wonder if that is still needed? I know this subject has been kicked around before, but those discussions were before this latest BIOS upgrade was available. So I wonder if anybody has any new information or suggestions in light of the latest BIOS upgrade.

I realize that when it comes to Thinkpads, the rule of thumb is to always install original IBM parts (read: stuff with "FRU" numbers on it).

The exception to the rule would be wireless cards. When it comes to mini PCI cards, you will always want to run a "Generic" card, unless it's something that originally shipped with the platform. In the case of the T series, that usually ends up being a 2100 b Band card, which you're probably not going to want to install.

So I guess the short answer is: Yeah, run the Generic card, since an IBM card with a FRU will probably come up as Device error 10- "Card cannot start". That would certainly be the case with a modern a/b/g card.
