T20 Processor Upgrade Problem

#1 Post by icyguyus » Sun Sep 24, 2006 12:11 am

Having some problems with my T20 while trying to upgrade

I have the most low end T20 model
the one with the 650MHz CPU and the Modem/Nothing

I purchased a SL53S 1GHz Processor
(Yes i know that the SL53S will run at 850MHz max)

while replacing it everything seemed fine but
in the end it didnt boot into OS

I can get into BIOS
and it does detect the processor (running at 800MHz)
I switched it into diagnostic mode
and I am getting the one beep good

but then it hangs before going into OS
ive even tried booting by CD-ROM

I think I read elsewhere I might need to
flash the cmos after a processor upgrade,
not sure if thats my situation.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You should be able to throw it in and go. Usually the CPU either works or doesn't. A lot of people will get rid of that little grey pad under the heatsink when they upgrade the CPU. If you did this you're overheating now. The grey thingy was a certain distance from the CPU.

Does this help?

Yes, I believe AbsoluteRaleigh may have a point. I had similar problem on a T21 while upgrading to 1Ghz. I removed the gray sticky pad and replaced with silver thermal paste...Ran well and cool.

What do you mean by "850MHz max"?

that particular model can't run the cpu with speedstep, so it runs at the lower frequency.

clayton bigsby...that's hilarious stuff.

Ah, so say if my T21 does do speedstep then it *should* be able to run at 1GHz if I put a SL53S chip in, yes?

Before anyone jumps on this.....it is from the Dave Chappelle Show, where Dave plays Clayton Bigsby, a blind white supremicist that doesn't know that he isn't white.

When I upgrade my T20 (original 700 MHz) with 1 GHz CPU, does it run at the higher frequency? Which CPU works (SL5QV, SL5TB, SL58S etc.)?
T23 - PIII 1200 MHz, 1024 MB, DVD-RW, SXGA+, WLAN Display
600X - PIII 850 MHz, 576 MB, DVD, USB 2.0, WLAN int.
600E - PIII 650 MHz SS Mod, 416 MB, CD-RW/DVD, WLAN XJack
TP 760XD - P166 MHz, 104 MB, 20 GB, ESS1688, USB 2.0, LAN

Pretty sure im not overheating

I replaced not only the processor but the fan so grey thingy is gone as well put in a T22 fan and used some article silver 5

Fan runs fine can defitnally feel it

I began to wonder if I damaged my board in the process
so I went back to the old 650 MHz processor to test,
left the T22 fan and the added some more thermal paste
and it boots up normally

going back to the SL53S
yet again i get stuck no farther than BIOS
beginning to wonder if i have a bad chip
but why does BIOS detect it then?

I have a low-end T20 as well. Started out as a 700MHz (2647-86U)

I purchased a 1GHz SL53S off eBay. It works at the full 1GHz, but it was a lot of work getting it to that point.

You DO need to do a BIOs upgrade. (This is what educates the older T20 boards that a 1 GHz CPU is available.)

Once the BIOs is upgraded, and the new CPU installed, reenter the BIOs, and choose to load default settings. Restart.

Once in XP turn off speedstep, and set XPs power panel to Always On. Restart.

Your new CPU will show up as the full 1GHz in XP properties.

It was a chore getting it to finally stick, but my T20 has worked without a hitch since then.
T43 1.8 / 2GB / 60GB 7K100 X31 1.4GHz / 2GB / 60GB 7K100
T20 700MHz / 512MB / 40GB 570E 500MHz / 320 MB
570 366MHz / 64MB (x2) 755CV 100MHz 486 / 8MB / 540MB
