T 30 runs at 1.2Ghz
Hello, everyone.
I own a T30 1.8 Ghz but it runs at 1.2Ghz.
I checked the Bios settings and they are set to Maximum on the processor options.
What can the problem be?
Did anybody have the same problem?
Thanks

This seems normal to me. My first laptop, the Dell Inspiron 8200, had 1.6GHz Pentium 4, and even though I specified "maximum performance" in the BIOS, it still ran at only 1.2GHz most of the time (according to WinXP's "right click on My Computer followed by Properties"). Every once in a while, however, it would run at the full 1.6GHz for a very brief time period.

download mobmeter from http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValle ... mm0310.zip
you will be able to monitor frequency and temp for the CPU, as well as battery and HD info.

that's normal.
all processors like P 3m, P4 and higher have speedstep. if you are running W98 or W2K your processor is fixed at low speed. you have to install a speestep utility to change the speed.
in XP the utility is included. normally it is set to adaptive mode (speed kicks in on high load), but you can change it manually to high or low speed.
the behaviour also depends on the power source. usually there are two scemes, one for battery mode (slow) and one for AC mode (adaptive). but these can be changed manually, too.
to moderator: maybe a sticky post for this topic might be helpful, because this question seems to appear every second day.

Just tried the Mobmeter on my laptop, nice tool. Thanks for the link!
I got the full 1.86Ghz all the time and thought this couldn't be right either. Looked up the power scheme in the power manager and realized that while on ac cpu speed is set to maximum. Changed it to adaptive and subsequently the speed dropped to about 800Mhz.
Could it be that your setting is on low? Don't know if you have ibm's power manager, but would think so.
However, I double checked with the system properties and in both cases (cpu setting high/adaptive) it gives me about 800MHz unlike mobmeter
I don't really have an explanation for that! Any ideas?

"System properties" tab uses internal XP driver method for frequency detection. Sometimes it shows wrong results.
I suggest to trust Mobmeter.
I wanted to create a new topic with the same title, but now have just one post explaining problem:

First of all this is easily fixed firstly you have to view if your T30 is really running at 1.2GHz:
http://support.intel.com/support/proces ... 014921.htm
Second: Pentium 4-M processors, when undervolting them, they run at 1.2GHz no matter the speed.
My T30 is a P4M @ 1.6GHz and I also saw that Windows reported running the CPU @ 1.2GHz
If the Intel Software tells you the laptop is running at 1.2Ghz or something else (Not max performance), just go to Power Options, in Windows Control Panel and change the profile to "Always On".
Then right-click My Computer and voilá, you'll see Windows reports the max speed of your CPU.
Odd enough, if you switch back to Portable profile, Windows still reports the max speed. Guess it needs a reboot.
Hope this helps

Yes, it really runs on 1.2 - all programs shows that, includin RMCPU, Speedswitchxp, NCH and Intel tool.
And, of course, various CPU benchmarks.
But, with NCH and "on demand" profile it can vary speed from 1.2 to 2.2, IF the battery inserted.
If not:

nothing can change it,
100% CPU load, BIOS and ACPI settings in "max performance", profile "always on".. - it's all seems useless.

Why you don't try SpeedSwitchXP, it's similar to NHC but it support P4M's:

Interesting...
When did you started having this problem??
One thing it crosses my mind is to reset all the BIOS settings, to the default values. Then shutdown the PC
I'm sure there's something in the BIOS, as the software can't control the CPU speed.
Good luck.
