Replacing the keyboard. Must Remove the CMOS Battery?

The IBM-Lenovo instructions for replacing a Thinkpad keyboard (T2X) says remove the little backup battery but the video instructions shows only removing the main battery.

Does anyone know if it is necessary to remove the backup battery. I do not like leaving my T23 completely without power if I do not have too.

Removing the backup (CMOS) battery on a T23 is not necessary if all you are going do to is replace the keyboard. However, if you are talking about the keyboard bezel, then the answer is "sort of". In order to remove the bezel you need to remove the screw holding the battery in place. You do not need to unplug the battery.

Thank you for the quick reply! The only time I have ever removed a backup battery is when I replaced it.

I know too well the big headache that can result from leaving any PC totally without power.

I've been ripping apart some T2x systems recently and in doing so I have to remove the backup battery (motherboard swaps and testing). Unless you have a BIOS password set (and didn't know it), I don't see any problem that you might have in pulling the battery.

Also, a CPU upgrade seems to require removing the battery, otherwise something seems to screw up the graphics. (At least this was the case when I upgraded my T20 from 700mhz to 850mhz.)

Sorry to get off topic here, but how do you know when your backup battery needs replaced, will something not work? I did see the small round battery when I removed my main battery last week to check the serial number. Thanks for any help.
