FRU Numbers

#1 Post by Rex » Tue Oct 10, 2006 1:32 am

Hi there,

After a somewhat tortuous journey, I have finally concluded that the screen of my T20 needs replacing (rather than everything else that I have replaced!)

Can get a LTN141x8-L00 screen on eBay but every one I look at, the FRU numbers are different to that listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual or the actual screen I currently have.

The HMM lists my screen as 05K9944, but I have found 05K9942 and even 46L2347.

What is the important bit, LTN141x8-L00 or the part number? My chances of finding the same part seem remote, the chances of a LTN141x8 are good.

Grateful for your advice,

Rex

An addendum to my initial post.

Is replacing the backlight tube itself a realistic option? Have seen the tubes on eBay, but perhaps replacing the whole screen is a better proposition.

Not sure about all of the different FRU numbers, but looking at the various hardware manuals, each of IBM's LCD vendors were assigned different FRU numbers (which makes sense). Whether or not you can use just anyone's 1024 x 768 14.1" panel depends upon the cabling standard that the manufacturer uses. To be safe, you should probably do what your instincts tell you; only replace the panel with what the HMM says. If you can get some guarantee of returning a panel which doesn't fit the cabling, without being charged for it, then by all means try it out (and report back here).

Replacing just the backlight can be easy or impossible, depending upon the construction used. If you haven't seen it already, there is a sticky thread in the 600 forum that explains how one was done. I have seen other postings here and off-site which says that it wasn't worth the effort. From my viewpoint, swapping the entire lid makes more sense. I just played T23 musical-LCDs over the weekend replacing a "red light" special with a sparkling-white panel from a dead motherboard and removed a SXGA+ (with antennas) for installation into another system later. Much easier to undo six screws than monkey around with a fragile backlight....

Ray,

Thanks for the advice. I have had a look at the backlight and figured tthere was a real risk of cracking the screen in just trying to get it appart.

As it happens, I have this very moment completed an eBay purchase of a replacement screen. slightly different FRU but replacing a Samsung LTN141x8-L00 with the same Samsung model. so figure there should be no problems.
