Rubber

#1 Post by Rex » Sat Oct 21, 2006 2:30 am

Hi there,

The rubber coating on my eBay bought T20 seems to be slightly 'sticky.'

I is there somwthing I can do to get rid of the stickiness? Have tried lightly cleaning with a damp rag and soap, but it does not work.

Grateful for any suggestions,

Many thanks,

Rex

Cleaning the TPad

#2 Post by newyorkpaulie » Sat Oct 28, 2006 9:01 am

Hi,
I had a similar problem which I fixed by doing this: I first wiped the suface with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol paying extra attention to the areas that had residue from labels. Then I brought back the sheen by wiping on some diluted skin lotion, removing the excess with a soft terry towel.

You can try some Goo Gone to do this, we have used Goo Gone on many laptops to remove smudges and stains and we have seen this sticky areas before.

Thanks very much for the ideas. Will give them a try.

I did try talc powder and it works a treat but leaves the surface looking white, smudgy and totally sticky free.

What is Goo Gone? Never heard of it this side of the pond but will have a look around.

goo gone==paraffin (USA kerosene aka jet fuel:-)

on various thinkpads, I've had good success cleaning/de-scuffing the outside and the so-called "palm rest" w/ paper tower lightly dosed w/ kerosene: keep it away from the LCD & keyboard. YMMV.

That's the trouble with that [censored] rubber they use on thinkpads, it's a right b***** to clean!

Also as with all forms of rubber it will eventually decay and peel off/melt =(
760ED All the way.

FEEL THE BURN! From the bottom of that particular laptop... right in the bawsack! eek

Sorry, did not read your location.. Goo Gone is advertised to remove most glues that have been applied. It is good in removing paper stickers that have been left on hard surfaces, it gets rid of any residue (goo) that you often encounter when you take off the sticker and is left with the glues...

I would try Goo Be Gone before I resort to alcohol, which is caustic to many forms of polymer (incorrectly called plastic in USA). Polymers are products made by using a certain kind of bonding chain. They range from very flexible (as the cones under Thinkpad keyboard keys) to metal-like strength material as used for Saturn Auto Body "compound" exterior body material.

For instance, some CD enthusiasts insist alcohol is good for cleaning CDs, even for removing scratches. CDs are an Aluminum composite disk sandwiched with two polymer disks. The special coating on the polymer disks are sensitive to alcohol. It eats away the coating, exposing the shiney polymer to smears and clouding, which prevents the laser reader from penetrating it well enough to read the pits on the aluminum composite disk inside.
