Non-diskette BIOS Update, anyone ever done this??

#1 Post by Purcy » Mon Nov 06, 2006 2:45 pm

I was just on Lenovo and searched for BIOS updates for my T22; it brought up this non-diskette approach and I'm wondering if anyone has done it this way. I am sort of concerned where it says after the updated has been completed the system will reboot and you need to enter BIOS. It then says if it asks for a password, enter the PROPER PASSWORD. My machine is second hand and it came with XP Prof already loaded in with Administrator already logged on. I have never logged out of Windows as I have no idea what the password is. Do you think I should chance this non-diskette approach. Here is the link to the Lenovo page:

I think these are two different kinds of passwords, one to enter BIOS and the other to enter WinXP Pro. But yeah, you need to first worry about whether WinXP Pro has a password because if it does and you log out, then you can't log back in! Go to "Settings" --> "Control Panel" --> "User Accounts" and click on the icon for the account you are using. If it says "Create a password", that means a password has NOT been set yet, so you can log out of Windows and re-enter later. However, if it says "Change the password", then there is already a Windows password and you must find out what it is before logging out!

To answer your question about non-diskette BIOS updates: That's how I usually do it and it has always worked, so there is nothing to worry about. In fact I think it's safer than using floppies.

Thanks so much, I just checked and there are 3 user accounts on my machine - Guest (logged off) Administrator and one called ASP.NET Machine A (Limited Account Password Protected). Now if I click on the Start button and the splash screen opens up for the Start Menu, it says ADMINISTRATOR at the top so I am assuming that is the account that is up. I did click on that under User Accounts and one of the options is CREATE A PASSWORD, so I guess this account does not have a password yet? It is just me and my husband that use this laptop, so there is no reason to password protect the account. Can I safely delete that other account called "ASP.NET Machine A " do you think? I can't get into it to see what it is for and I never use it. Thank you

I just re-read those Lenovo install instructions and it does not say that I need to log out of Windows to install this update. In fact, I have to be logged onto Windows to access the RUN command to get the thing going. Thank you for your help.

I think I saw such an account name once a long time ago but have no idea what it's for. I'll let someone else help you with that.

Pianowizard, I just found this. I guess it is okay to leave on the machine:

Now I am relieved to know that the Administrator account is not passworded, I was always worried that my husband might accidentally log out of Windows.

Dngrsone, thanks for your reply and I'm glad it went smoothly for you. When you were resetting BIOS after it had updated, did it ask you any kind of password? Again, thanks :D

No, Purcy... I didn't have any passwords set prior, and it didn't ask me for any afterward.

Okay, I want to thank everyone here who held my hand saying this BIOS update thing was easy to do. I just completed it and it took all of 3 or 4 minutes. I am back and all seems to be working fine and I now flaunt version 1.12BIOS! Piece of cake and I used the non-diskette approach if anyone is interested. :D

Just updated my bios on my "new" T23 from the Lenovo site last night; could not have been any easier.

Is it easier than the diskette version????

Glad to see you got it updated. Exacting how does the non-diskette version work?

Download the BIOS file onto your hard drive and double-click on its icon. That's it!

Yep, that's all you do. I did create new file on my C drive called TempBIOS and then I put the downloaded update file into that folder. Then you make sure you're all hooked up nice and tight to your A/C adapter with a fully charged battery (as they will remind you about a million times) be sure also that you are off of a docking station or port repl.; then just double click on that program in your folder and away you go. Please know that shortly after you open that program Windows will shut down very abruptly and your screen will be black. Hold tight as you will soon enter BIOS and a new program screen will appear and walk you through the very short, easy process. Then after all is done you'll hear a loud beep and the system shuts down. Here is the process for my T22, you should print it out to read before you start this process:

Guess I had better get XP on my new HDD so I can use the easier method.

I'm new to Thinkpads, but it sure seems as though IBM has a very welled layed out plan. Gotta get one of these for myself
