t30 boot up problem

#1 Post by codak01 » Wed Nov 29, 2006 5:24 am

Everytime I boot up to the log in screen on WIndows my mouse doesn't move. I'm not sure why. Booting up in safe mode doesn't work either. I also tried booting up with it's last known good config.

Hi there. The usual gesture would be first try to reseat all hardware like HD, RAM, Ultrabay CD-ROM and reboot to see if you have any error or beeps. Lets take it frm there.

Also, a visit to the IBM support page would give you alot of ideas.

If darkdragoon's suggestion doesn't work, try:

(Assuming trackpoint behaves the same way as the "mouse" - what sort of mouse are you using??)
1. If using mouse, is the mouse OK on another machine? If not - dead mouse.
2. If you have another good mouse does it work in this machine? If no - stuffed drivers, or stuffed mouse port (which port are you using?). If trackpoint also doesn't work then - stuffed drivers, or drivers not being loaded.

Run PC Doctor to rule out hardware faults.
Cheers

vlyne is right, to run PC doctor would be indeed a jolly good idea.

I would like to add, when you are going to reseat all hardware, why not reseat the keyboard connector cable while you at it, since the trackpoint is attached it.

Just loose 2 screw on the bottom and follow procedures on the hardware manual or to search an online movie version.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I ended up trying to run linux off a cd just to see what would happen and it worked. I could move the mouse and everything. SO i think it's a problem with windows. I was trying to do a system restore right before this happened.

The question is now can I somehow fix windows to get it working again or do i have to reformat?

Try "Repair Windows" off the CD?

goto start menu--> run--> type sfc / scannow

This command will repair all files under Windows. You also probably need a Windows CD to do that.

I tried to repair windows, but it couldnt copy one file driver.cab so i skipped it. Right now it keeps getting stuck on installing the devices. It's asking for a file called kuser.dll but I can't use the mouse or the keyboard to do anything.

If you've missed installing driver.cab (which is the "cabinet" for storing drivers needed by Windows) kuser.dll may not be the only thing needed.

Somone help this person out before they're sent on a wild google chase!

Here is another deal. If you got to a point that you need to reinstall Windows XP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
1. Start WindowsXP
2. Go to the location of your source files
3. Run WINNT32 /unattend
For example, D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend ( copy & paste this command into the RUN box, then press ENTER ) Your computer will do the rest.
Or,
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
Copy & paste > D:\I386\winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter.
If you have i386 on your drive, you can replace D: ( if D: is your cd drive ) with the location of it.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the input guys, esp. darkdragoon. The problem is I cant get into windows XP, it just freezes there. What I ended up doing was installing a second copy of Windows XP on my comp and hooked it up to my network and backed up all the files i needed. Now I'm in the process of reformatting.
