Upgrading a T23 for USB 2.0 and Gigabit ethernet

#1 Post by schleptop » Wed Dec 06, 2006 1:00 am

I'd like to upgrade a secondhand T23 that I got recently to be able to handle BOTH USB 2.0 and Gigabit ethernet. Has anyone come across a PCMCIA card which handles both? Or is there another way of upgrading the T23 to do this?

It's possible you might be able to replace the mini-pci card to support gigabit ethernet, but, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Though I would question the usefulness of gigabit ethernet on a T23 in either case.

I am sure you can get pcmcia versions of both USB2 and gigabit ethernet but you probably will not be able to use them both at the same time. All USB2 pcmcia cards are much thicker at the connector end than the card thickness, this is to allow for two USB2 and a power connector. With this in, there is no way to install the ethernet card unless you find one with a dongle to connect to your network.

For USB2, go to BUY.COM, they had these cards for less than $10.00 when using Google checkout and rebates. I actually ordered one for my T23.

The original IBM-USB2.0-adaptor uses a small connector-cable, so you can use it in the lower slot below your PCMCIA-GigE-Card. Changing MiniPCI won't help, since the T23 doesn't have the LAN on MiniPCI. Its on the Ethernet-daugtercard and there is no GigE-daughtercard available.

Has anyone tried a USB-Gigabit adapter? I think the effective throughput of gigabit ethernet will not really be too limited by USB 2.0 speeds.
