AC Adapter Recall

#1 Post by cinemafia » Wed Dec 06, 2006 4:39 pm

I just noticed there's an ongoing recallfor the AC adapter I got with my newly-acquired T20. Pretty cool that I'll be getting a brand new AC adapter in a few days, especially considering the one I got with it has some serious fraying on its cable (although it has worked fine...I'm afraid the thing could start a fire).

Just a note to clarify: this recall is only for 56 (54, by my calculations) watt adapters with the FRU of "02K6549". The T2x series laptops should have been shipped with 72 watt adapters from the factory. Using the lower wattage supply on the T2x may cause them to run hotter than designed. You would be better off using the 72 watt (16V 4.5A) adapter if you can. I don't know what IBM/Lenovo will provide as a replacement for your recalled supply, but if it's a 56 watt unit keep a eye (hand?) on it when being used to see if it is running hot.

My T22 came with the 16V 4.5A adapter FRU# 02K6757.

I got my T20 from a second-hand computer store, so the adapter was probably whatever they had lying around. Fortunately, between it and the T20, I was eligible for the recall. But, yeah I'll have to wait and see what they end up sending me.

Just an FYI, the site says the order will be processed in 48 hours, but obviously that's not the case. I was wondering what was going on, being that it's been 10 days now since I placed mine, and decided to finally give them a call. They told me it's actually going to be at least 30 days...

Oh well, at least it's free!

Whats another way to tell the wattage, without using the FRU number? I have several adapters, that are all 16V 4.5a. Are these ALL 73 watt units? What is the voltage and amperage for a 56 watt unit?

What about the "Dog Bone" Adapter, are they all one single wattage, or were they also built with different amperages?

I had tried to research my adapters at IBM, but there are so many friggen FRUs my eyes started to glaze over. I have an upgraded T20 (1GHz) That seems to run really hot after extended use, but not sure if it is the CPU upgrade, or the adapter. (CPU has new T22 Heat sink and thermal paste)

It would have been so much easier to express the wattage on the adapter! Thanks for the knowledge.

Wattage can be calculated by multiplying the DC output voltage (16V in the case of most IBM adapters), times the rated output current, in cases like this, 3.36A or 4.5A.

By my calculations, this yields 54 watt (16 * 3.36) and 72 watt (16 * 4.5) adapters. I don't know why IBM calls them 56 watt, but it's close enough. So all of yours are 72 watts.

Not sure about the "dog bone" version. I believe that I used to have one and I think it was a 54 watt model.

Ray, thanks very much for that information. I'll double check all my holdings tonight.

3.36 and 4.5 will be very easy to remember from now on!

Wow...so, uh, I just got the replacement AC Adapter three days ago. That's right, it took a total turnaround time of 5 months and 8 days. I had honestly given up on and forgotten about the whole thing when the new one came in the mail...but, here it is. I guess efficiency is overrated these days?

Theoretically, would an adaptor with an output of 19V 3.16A fry a T21?

Theoretically, maybe. I would assume that the power circuits inside the system could handle a fairly wide range (says several volts) of input voltage. The 3.16A is close enough to the 3.36A IBM adapter.

What might happen?

- nothing
- power circuits run a little warmer due to the extra voltage that needs to be "stepped down"
- fuse blows
- semiconductor(s) blow, protecting the fuse

Just be sure that the polarity of the DC power plug is center positive. If you are not sure, or can't measure it, don't even try to plug it in.
