T23 Graphics Upgrade?

#1 Post by jamiphar » Wed Dec 13, 2006 3:29 pm

Is there anything I can do to improve the graphics performance on my T23? Would getting a docking station and a good video card do the trick? Are there only certain cards that will work in the docking station?
Also, are there any PCMCIA-type cards that will improve the graphics?

The 16mb video card does the trick for the most part, but it gets a little slow with AOEIII on highest settings.

From what I've seen and heard 16mb is all you've got. The chip is a part of the board and can't be expanded or taken out like on a desktop through PCI or anything. Good luck.

Yeah, I gather that you can't change the internal card. But I'm wondering if it works well to have the laptop running from the PCI video card install a docking station.

No, the card can't be upgraded, because it is integrated (ie. soldered to the system board).

With the dock, you can use the half height PCI video card, but I believe it will only effect an external display, not the LCD display.

I'd need a half-height card? I haven't received the dock yet, so I don't know. But the compatible videos cards mentioned here seem to be full-height, don't they?

Wow, I thought that they were half-height only. Thanks for pointing that out. The half-height thing as the only reason that I haven't looked for one....until now. :)

Hehe, no prob. :)

Do you happen to know if the dock is picky with which video card is used? Should pretty much any card work, just like it would with a desktop computer?

Beware of the PCI graphic cards on the docking station. There are discussed topic before on some graphic card on docking station that cause massive lock ups and freeze mouse pointers. However I would point out that, PCI graphic cards is not suitable for docking station series. I would recommend sound card to be put in....rather than PCI graphic.

Cards for docking stations

#10 Post by schen » Mon Dec 18, 2006 12:47 am

I've always heard that you could you video cards, but the docks were extremely picky as to what they'd accept. Unfortunately, I've never seen a list of compatible cards.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

the very fastest card to be fitted in the dock would be an nvidea fx 5500 pci 256 ddr3 ram it is full size and thick to go with a fan, on my t30 it disable's lcd screen ,but is kick [censored] quick i can play quake 4 thats no mean feat for a laptop , if you check about most say don't use the same vid chipset in your dock so nvidea is safe it is also faster than the radeons in pci form and better than the nvidea 6200pci as there 64bit ( although early pci where 128 bit). basically almost anything pci will fitt the slot the cost on ebay should be less than £60 all in
