Win wont shut down on T23
Win wont shut down on T23
Narrowed the problem down to Network Adaptor.
After 3.5 hrs with MS tech and IBM tech updated driver was installed but did not fix the problem.
Thank you,
Stephen

Couple of questions as nobody else has dropped in...
1) What operating system are you using?
2) How are you shutting down the system. This may seem like a strange question, but there are several different ways depending upon which OS you are using.
3) Exactly what happens during the shutdown procedure that is "out of the ordinary"?

This has happened a couple of times on my Gateway laptop but not on any Win XP Thinkpad, as far as I can remember. But it's been only isolated incidents and not every time I shut it down. I'm assuming that you are holding the power button down for several seconds to finally power off, correct?
You said that you thought the network interface card (NIC) had a bad driver but updating it didn't help. Have you tried to remove the card and see if the shutdown problem remains? I know that the card can prevent both boot-up and operating system installs; it may be possible that it's affecting your shutdown. Does the network interface seem to be operating normally otherwise?

Correct, I now must hold down the power on/off button for about six seconds for my T23 to shut down.
What the MS technician had me do is as follows:
Click on "start", click on "run", click on "devmgmt.msc"
This brings up the "Device Manager" window. If I disable the driver (Intel(R) Pro/100 Ve Network Connection) under "Network Adaptors" and reboot, then I can shut down the computer under Windows, but then I can't access the internet.
I hesitate to start pulling hardware.
Question: Could I disable the the Network Adaptors driver and still access the internet via a wireless card or by some other means?

The ethernet card is under one of the panels on the bottom of the laptop (to the left of the IBM label). Remove the panel and the ethernet card is the smaller of the two boards, secured by two screws. Carefully pull off the ribbon cable and remove.babaloo wrote:I hesitate to start pulling hardware.
Yes, that should work. Each network connection will have its own drivers and settings. If you use the Device Manager to disable the existing ethernet board, then you may not have to remove it. However, I have seen strange, almost unrelated problems crop up with bad ethernet cards so you may still experience issues even if you disable it under Device Manager.babaloo wrote:Question: Could I disable the the Network Adaptors driver and still access the internet via a wireless card or by some other means?

I don't know about this series, but I just recently read the error message section in the T42 Hardware Maintenance Manual and it appears that a hardware error occurs when more than one ethernet controller is installed.
Numeric error codes
01C9
More than one Ethernet devices are found. Remove one of them. Press <Esc> to continue.

I've got a couple of T23s running both the factory Actiontec wireless cards and the generic Broadcom card I like to use. The ethernet cards are still installed (and enabled) without any problems. My daugther also has two T23s setup with PCMCIA wireless cards. My guess is that any of the wireless cards (MiniPCI or PCMCIA) are not recognized as "network controllers" and work fine. I have NOT tried installing an ethernet PCMCIA card in any of my T23s so I don't know if that will work.
I think I know the error you are talking about. Might have it been three controllers causing a problem?
(edit: Or maybe it was two bootable network controllers? Now I'm not sure about what I read earlier...)

this problem seems familiar...i had something like this back on the win9x days...the windows didn't shutdown 'cause of faulty APM driver...try reinstalling the APM driver or try to install NT Legacy APM driver with the Add New Hardware Wizzard in Control Panel
good luck

I also am just throwing this out there, as we had that same problem on my husband's PC (HP Pavillion) not shutting down, just hanging on that blue Windows screen that says "Windows is now shutting down"
He no longer goes on the internet with that PC so I uninstalled Norton and installed Perfect Disk 8 defrag program - I ran an initial defrag of the computer with that and boy, his computer runs so fast now, but more importantly, shuts down immediately each time.

Put your computer in Verbose Shutdown and see what is hanging.
