Blasted PXE-E05 error

#1 Post by joester » Sat Dec 23, 2006 8:31 am

I've been getting error beeps on boot up (1 long 2 short) for some time now, and trying to debug it. I read somewhere about CTRL-S on boot up to enter the LAN configuration for network boot up, and thought I would try it on mine (no reason for net-boot, but nosey).
My T21 wouldn't enter the setup, but instead I get the PXE-E05 error and the beeps are gone.... even the POST beep.
I searched the forum and found several instances of this error, and could not find a way of disabling it in the BIOS. Where / how do I disable it?

I would love to have an error free TP, but maybe I need to just live with this? Everything works as is as far as I know. The modem is the only thing I haven't used.
BTW: No bangs in the device manager, and I didn't see anything with PXE-E05 attached to it.

Thanks.
Joe

PXE-E05 looks like a network boot error to me. This would occur if you were trying to boot off of a network, but was not attached to one. I don't know much about booting from a network, but if you are not booting from a network, then you should go to the BIOS setup menu and make sure that the boot order has the network farther down the list than the hard drive.

Boot order example (copied from a BIOS setup menu):
1. USB FDD:
2. Legacy Floppy Drives:
3. ATAPI CD0:
4. USB CD:
5. IDE HDD0:
6. PCI LAN:
7. USB HDD:
8. IDE HDD1

You would want to make sure PCI LAN was farther down the list than IDE HDD0. If you still get the PXE-E05 error, then that means it could not boot up your primary hard drive for some reason.

Regarding the beep codes for my T42, 1 long 2 short means a problem with the System Board, LCD, or DIMM memory. I know you do not have a T42, but rather a T21, however generally the beep codes seem to be the same for the various model ThinkPads. You can download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your T21 to verify. Hardware Maintenance Manual (April 2002) - ThinkPad T20, T21, T22, T23

You might find PC Doctor for DOS useful for diagnosing hardware errors.

I've run PC Doctor, and nothing to report.
The only thing I can figure is that the LAN BOOT needs configured to mind it's own business.
I've moved it to last in the boot sequence, and after the error it boots as would be expected. It just needs to report the error before it does anything.
I'm under the impression that I should be able to CTRL-S during the boot sequence when the IBM splash screen is up, but it just shows the error and boots normally instead of entering the configuration like I read it should.

I guess I don't mind the error so much, but I would like to make it dissappear. It sure beats the beep codes...

It seems like I got that error when the laptop was not detecting a hard drive.

Can't say that for mine...
I've hit the escape key in the splash screen and seen that it recognizes the HDD.
I think I just need to configure it to mind it's own, or disable it.

I just haven't found the magic setting to do it.
