2.4ghz on the T30 plus other upgrades

#1 Post by helmet4000 » Sat Dec 30, 2006 7:38 pm

I noticed posts about this in the past and I wanted to mention that I was able to successfully upgrade my T30 to 2.4ghz. I first learned of this here:

http://web.mit.edu/~joncox/www/t30upgrade.html

I followed his lead and was able to successfully install a 2.4ghz on my T30-2367.

The only difference was that I used a thermal pad for cooling. While the machine is a little bit hotter (I originally had 2.0ghz P4), it does not compromise performance. Could definitely notice the extra 400mhz of CPU power.

It came with 2 x 512 sticks of RAM and I replaced those with 2 x 1gb sticks for a total of 2GB.

I also put in a DVD-RW/CD-RW to replace combo CDRW/DVD-ROM.

So this machine is not going out of style anytime soon I hope! :D

Just a few months ago the only laptop experience of mine was a Dell Inspiron 2650. I never knew how good IBM's were...that Dell was just a Toyota Camry compared to this IBM (I guess BMW is the proper analogy).

Put details here:

I would've gone with Lexus. You can't keep a good Toyota down. I thought the RAM limit was 1GB or is that only on the 2366's?

... may be something that was true when hmm was written, b/c 1gb sticks not yet in wide existence, i bet they will work in 2366 too...a sly way to find is to ask someone on ebay selling 1gb sticks dor t30, they seem to know these things

The OP is correct...the 1GB limit was due to the lack of 1GB sticks at the time. With the latest BIOS (just to be sure), the 2GB limit should apply to every T30, as long as both ram slots work. ;-)

I was also looking in to doing this.

now that i am using my T30 all the time now due to my desktop failing, i upgraded to a

7200 rpm 60gig HDD !!

the hard drive made a nice improvment.

looking into getting a dock with a pci slot so i can play world of warcraft a little better on an external screen.

my cpu is a 1.8ghz

and i have 2 256 sticks of ram.

looking into getting atleast 2 512 sticks

I was probably spoiled on my T30 because both memory slots work! I notice it is a heck of a problem for many T30 owners. Must really suck! :(

I just decided to buy a T30 for my wife because she likes mine a lot. The one I am bidding on states that only 1 of the memory slots works so I will probably pull out the 512 stick that it is populated with, auction it on EBAY and purchase a 1,024 stick. I do intensive statistical stuff on my T30 but she does mostly word-processing, email, surfing.

I had to send my T30 back twice for them to fix the bad memory slot. After doing a bunch of upgrades, I'm really liking the T30. A few of my friends have Dells, they seem a little flimsy compared to the T30. Wouldn't mind having a Core2Duo though.
I checked around real quick, those P4 2.4M processors seem to be pretty rare. I would have used Arctic Silver on the processor and heatsink. I use it on all the desktops I build, it really does help lower the CPU temps.
The T30 with a USB2.0 external drive is a real nice field unit.

i am guess it is b/c of new year's eve, but i just won the t30 auction (on ebay) for my wife (2ghz, 30gb HDD, 512mb, XP Pro) for $380.01. I think that is a very good deal. I bought my T30 from the same Ebay store and their customer service is phenomenal. If anyone is out there, now might be a good time to bid on stuff to get it cheap while everyone else is watching the festivities on tv.

The 2.4ghz I found from an Ebay seller for about $190 back in November.

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dl ... rch=Search

There are a couple on EBAY right now but very expensive.

Froogle has some for less, just saw one for $152. Of course, check resellerratings.com before buying from some of the web-only stores that come up in a Froogle search. Some of the web-only stores are pure scams so be careful.

I heard a rumour somewhere about a 2.6ghz chip in a T30, but I would have to dig some more.

$380 is a good deal for a 2G T30. Memory is fairly cheap and Travelstar 7200rpm drives seem to work well with the T30. USB2.0 PCMCIA cards are less than $20.
I would worry about overdoing it with the CPUs though. If your 2.4G is running well, I would reckon a 2.6G performance increase would be minor and I would worry about overheating with the limited amount of heatsinks/fans available.
With a laptop, I would value dependability over bleeding edge performance. With a desktop, if your rig was running hot, there are many ways to add cooling, no so much with an itty, bitty laptop.

Definitely, the 2.4ghz setup on my T30 runs so smoothly right now that I am not planning on messing with it.

The only upgrade I plan is like you suggested, a bigger HDD.
